Melds a few classic sci-fi stories into one mystery thread,
By Christopher P. Obert (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sarah's Landing (Episode I, The Sarah's Landing Series) (Paperback)
This Sci-Fi mystery is a mix of old and new themes with a little New England village thrown in the mix. It is fast moving and at times jumps around leaving the reader little time to catch their breath. The idea behind the story is interesting and melds a few classic sci-fi stories into one mystery thread. The book ends very suddenly and leaves the reader scrambling for part two.

A spellbinding tale to a planet in an undiscovered galaxy!,
By Jackie Young (Correspondent-Westford Eagle,MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Publisher No Longer Exists (Hardcover)
Even those who are not sure they are science fiction fans may be swept up in Sarah's Landing-I, a spellbinding tale which takes the reader from the rocky shores of a small New England town to a planet in an undiscovered galaxy thousands of light years away. The wonder of it is that the author has managed to tell the tale of astronaut/biologist Joshua Morgan so convincingly. Her down-to-earth approach, soaring imagination and her expertise in software engineering are a winning combination. The kinds of experiences that her characters encounter have the ring of truth to them.Set in the year 2055, the book centers around the hero's attempts to solve the 111-year-old mystery of people who vanished 10 years before the new millennium, and the loss of the first starship, Earth Star-I which vanished 51 years later. This fast-paced novel, which incidentally, is also a first-rate love story, will undoubtedly pull readers in. Bowman's powers of description are second to none. Here is a book that is difficult to put down - a real page turner.

It's so nice to read a book that isn't predictable. There's amazing twists and turns that just kept me turning pages. I had to read it in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next one!

Sarahs Landing is a work of pure imagination.,
This review is from: Publisher No Longer Exists (Hardcover)
This sci-fi tale is a perfect blend of fantasy, mystery, and romance working together in a most seductive way. The peaceful setting of this New England coastal village is anything but what it seems. Dark forces are at work breaking down the barriers of two separate worlds. Its rich characters will draw you in as they struggle to find answers to a century old mystery they believe is a connection between our own planet and one called Theon. Sarahs Landing is the first in a four part series, and as such leaves the reader begging for more. The characters are real and complex, driven by compassion and loyalty. But where their loyalties lie is another matter. The plot is intriguing and spun in true sci-fi fashion. All the elements of a wondrous tale are here as Elena keeps the reader in suspense from beginning to end. I cant wait to read book II, The Telepaths of Theon.

Sci-fi thriller is original and believable,
By Rachel L Webb (Groton, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Publisher No Longer Exists (Hardcover)
Sarah's Landing is the best scifi book I've read in a long time. The incorporation of an actual tragic historical event, and Bowman's disciplined use of future science and capabilities, means that the science does not get in the way of the fiction. The characters interact naturally with each other and enter into some great humorous conversations, which leads to some nice touches.

Not Science Fiction, and not done terribly well...,

This review is from: Contact:: Book I - Sarah's Landing Series (Paperback)
I'll admit that part of my problem with this book is that I listened to the audio version. The reader, although having a pleasant voice, speeds headlong through the paragraphs and chapters so that any situational division is missed. The effect is jarring and awkward to the possible detriment of the story.
That being said, this work is not science fiction and barely speculative fiction. There is far more mystery and suspense along with paranormal activity and bodice-ripping romance than anything I would recognize as science fiction, a genre I have been enjoying for over 40 years. This is a pastiche, composed of bits and pieces of all sorts thrown somewhat haphazardly together. Perhaps it would have benefited from a vigorous and through editing; we'll never know. The characters are one dimensional and seem to forget their own histories and skills whereas the observant reader will not. How is it that the major female character, the love interest on Earth, has no cognition of her abilities at the end of this 1st book? Did she forget as conveniently as her other psychic friends seem to have? As a fan of SF, both modern and "old School", I think it must be a matter of taste and this work is not to mine. I suggest prospective readers balance the gushing praise in the other reviews with my own less-sanguine view and decide for themselves. |
