Book Description

February 24, 1995 0521334039 978-0521334037
At Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania, natural erosion exposed a series of superimposed geological beds containing rich artifacts and fossil assemblages spanning the past 1.8 million years. The site is famous as a result of excavations conducted there since 1951 under the direction of Mary Leakey and her husband, the late Louis Leakey. This book records the archaeological finds in the upper part of the Olduvai Gorge sequence, covering the period 1.2 to 0.4 million years ago, and includes artifacts and faunal remains excavated from sites in Beds III, IV and the Masek Beds.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...an indispensable record of the later part of the earlier Paleolithic at Olduvai Gorge....It contains the essential data from which theoretical constructs can begin to be attempted....an essential reference work for all who wish to understand the Lower Paleolithic." J. Desmond Clark, American Anthropologist

"There is no question that this is an important volume and one that was put together with a great deal of care. The basic data that are supplied here in such detail fill an important void in our understanding of the Olduvai sequence and it will undoubtedly be put to good use to further our understanding of this remote period." Murray C. McClellan, Journal of Field Archaeology

"...Mary Leakey should be congratulated for creating a way to study and to describe it to the general archaeological community." Pamela R. Willoughby, Canadian Jrnl of Archaeology

Book Description

This volume, written largely by Mary Leakey herself, is the last of the reports on the Olduvai excavation and records the archaeological finds in the upper part of the Olduvai sequence from excavations carried out from the end of 1968 until 1971.
