With an introduction to UK and EU law, full coverage of electronic rights and e-commerce issues and detailed coverage of changes in UK and EU legislation, this third edition of Publishing Law continues in its status as a comprehensive guide to the law as it affects the publishing process.

Hugh Jones and Christopher Benson address a range of key legal issues in the publishing process and explain legal points with reference to important statutes, cases and relevant trade practices. The issues include:

  • copyright, moral rights, commissioning and contracts, including online access and ebooks
  • libel and other legal risks such as negligence, privacy and obscenity
  • infringement and defences such as fair dealing; trade marks and passing off
  • consumer law, data protection, advertising and promotion, distribution and export.

This work is a comprehensive handbook for publishers, authors and agents, and anyone who needs a practical understanding of where and how the law may apply.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Excellent coverage of the increasingly complex area of publishing law, pitched at a level that is highly accessible by both the student and publishing professional. - Conrad Gardner - Head of Publications, Risk Books

The accuracy and depth of information are impressive, the authors succeed in explaining the technicalities more clearly in a few pages than many could in a whole volume ... The book is beautifully written, clearly explaining the essential concepts with flashes of Hugh Jones dry wit - The Bookseller

A useful, user-friendly and clear guide to the maze of publishing from a legal point of view...It should be on every publishers desk and probably on the bookshelf of every author - LOGOS

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommendation for the Publisher... (and Note for purchaser), July 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book is exactly what the description says that is. The only thing I wish I had done, before rushing to purchase: Click to look at the paperback (or hard cover) edition and "Look Inside" at the Table of Contents. If I had done that I would have realized the book's focus is on U.K. & European Union Publishing Law. If I had read the editorial reviews, I probably would have been able to guess the focus would not be on U.S. law.

I would recommend the publisher update the product description to reflect the body (or bodies) of law that the publication focuses on.

I'm keeping the book, as the information will still be extremely useful to be able to reference & research.
