A good Sister Angie, if you can find it, December 30, 2004

Source: Live performance, February 23, 1967 with excerpts from a live performance of "Madama Butterfly" dating from October 23, 1973.
Sound: Fair mono recorded amid an audience that seems to have been suffering from a particularly nasty flu season.
Format: One disk with fourteen tracks for "Suor Angelica," approximately 51 minutes. Nine tracks for "Madama Butterfly," approximately 25 minutes.
Documentation: No libretto. No plot summary for either opera. There is a brief outline of Elisabeth Carron's career, but nothing on the other performers or on the circumstances of the two recordings. Track list identifies characters singing and provides timings. All in all, documentation is comparable to one of Opera d'Oro's more dismal outings.
This recording is pretty much what it purports to be: a decent live performance of "Suor Angelica" built around an acceptably good soprano. If I had been in the audience, I'd have thought my time well spent. "Suor Angelica" is hardly Puccini at his best and record store shelves do not groan under the weight of its recordings. This set would be a nice back-up for those who weary of Sutherland, Tebaldi, Freni or whoever--sorry about that, all you true fans, but it can happen. It is also a handy set for someone who wants no more than a reasonable performance of this slightly (and deservedly) obscure opera.
I think this "Suor Angelica" is worth a solid four stars.
