The oldies are still the most fascinating, May 28, 1999
This review is from: Puccini: Century's Greatest Singers (Audio CD)
I cannot claim that "older is better," but I do love the Romophone release <The Century's Greatest Singers in Puccini> (86001-2), giving us a full 78 minutes of 19 tracks of vintage Puccini with such stars as McCormack, Melba, Bori, Muzio, Gigli, and other "golden" voices from the acoustic past. I have already enjoyed this several times and can highly recommend it for those who put style before superkolassalhifidelitystero and want their Puccini closer to what the composer had in mind. Alas, the booklet gives no information about the singers but it does show the covers of the sets from which these selections were drawn as well as other gems in the Romophone roster. Try to get this one and another for a gift to a discerning friend.
