Editorial Reviews

The historic 1963 Japanese premiere of this rarely performed, late masterpiece starred the great singing actress Antonietta Stella, whose fearless approach to the vocally and dramatically demanding title role is a model of Puccini style. Tenor Gastone Limarilli appeared as Dick Johnson and Anselmo Colzani as Jack Rance. Japanese subtitles remain on screen, with additional options to view subtitles in English. A DVD bonus is an exclusive interview with Stella (Rome, 2008). "La Fanciulla del West is such a bold work, so full of broad orchestral strokes, that it is easy to forget how delicately it must be handled in order for it to work effectively and for its passages of sublime lyricism to be given their due. Puccini took his greatest chances harmonically in this work: the influence of Debussy and Richard Strauss is present but always integrated into Puccini's own musical language.... Once one falls for its abundant riches of music, characterization and-yes-charm, it's an addiction. The success of the opera depends mainly upon the soprano singing and acting the title role. A grasp of Puccini style is an essential part of becoming Minnie: one could act Minnie by attempting to understand her psychology, but a soprano cannot be Minnie unless she understands the Puccinian idiom."-Opera News

Format: DVD
Fanciulla is my favorite Puccini opera and I saw it live with Corelli, Collier, and Ludgin. Of course, no tenor is going to come up to Corelli's big toe. And Limarelli is not pleasant to look and and sounds very nasal. Stella is what makes this version so special. She is spectacular, acting and singing. She is the only Minnie that bounces around like a country gal with all that youthful energy. This gal radiates!! Most of the other Minnies act like they are in their 30s or 40s. Really sedate, except for Daniels. You get this one for the Minnie. The sets and direction are 50 years old so don't expect the polish of later versiona.
