I never knew the game of hockey could be so intense., February 5, 2010
This review is from: Puckheads (Kindle Edition)
Zoë Whipple's filming company is known for being one of the best. Zoë's perfectionist attitude always has her digging for answers and trying to find beauty in her work. Zoë agrees to film a documentary about the Portland Thunder hockey team's championship season. She never expects to fall in love with the team's captain, Daniel Crasseau, or for him to feel the same way. Neither does Zoë expect to find herself in the middle of a major media scandal or the target of vandalism by an unknown person.
When a rookie ends up dead on the ice, Zoë begins searching for answers and discovers that illegal painkillers and steroid usage is very common. A leak to the press has the team members blaming Zoë for all their recent misfortunes and at least one person is out for Zoë's blood. Even Daniel believes Zoë is the one who leaked out the drug news, despite her denials, and accuses her of imagining nonexistent conspiracies. Can Zoë continue making the documentary? Can the Thunder team still somehow win the championship? And is it possible for Zoë and Daniel to survive it all and remain together?
**** FOUR STARS! I could not help but like the character of Zoë almost instantly. She is intelligent, full of life, honorable, and the pride in her work clearly shows. I am disappointed in the character of Daniel though. I understand that "hockey players are poisoned by testosterone overload" (quoted from story), but no matter what he thought to himself or told others, his actions simply never showed he really loved Zoë. (At least not enough for me.)
As for the story itself, the author clearly showed how loud, thrilling, and intense the game of hockey is. I could almost see Zoë's jump and yell in excitement as she attended her first live game. The pressure players are under to perform well on the ice is shown too. It is no wonder that there is a lot of potential for the use of steroids and the abuse of other drugs. Whether you are a fan of sports or not, I have no doubt that you will enjoy this romance. ****
