Editorial Reviews

Review

"I encourage every parent of a child with ADD to take advantage of the wonderful insights into the life and feelings of a child with ADD that Sterling Pratt offers in Pudd'nhead Parenting."
Linda P. Smith, co-founder of the National CHADD "Parent to Parent: Family Training on AD/HD" curriculum.

"Sterling Pratt provides a wealth of practical advice on what works, what doesn't, and why.  Best of all, he relates his own experiences with a blend of earnestness, humor, and compassion that makes his book a delight to read."
Nadine Nelson, B.S. Psychology and mother of four young children.

Book Description

Parents of children with ADD experience a lot of anxiety and frustration about how to help their child both avoid pain and achieve success. The various mental health care professionals at their disposal are qualified to offer valuable intervention, but do not address the one element that can make those efforts effective—the working relationship between the parent and child. Pudd'nhead Parenting takes parents through three essential steps: 1. Understanding, accepting and empathizing with their child, 2. Helping their child view him or herself in a positive way, 3. Coaching their child through challenges and toward a fulfilling life.

When our son was diagnosed with ADD in the 3rd Grade, there was very little information available about the condition. As we struggled to find strategies to use, we discovered that we were pretty much on our own.

Since that time much has been written about ADD, excellent academic papers have been presented and national organizations have been organized for parent and teacher education. What has been missing is a practical, hands-on book about dealing with every-day situations between parent and child.

Pudd'nhead Parenting fills this void. Finally, we have a book from an author who has lived an ADD life who now, as a parent, is experiencing life on the other side of the mirror. Sterling B. Pratt's book entertains, enlightens and, most of all, leads the reader toward strategies that help parents in the most critical area, forming a positive working relationship with a child with ADD/AD/HD.

Over the last twenty years, I have taught many strategy-filled classes for parents of children with ADD/AD/HD. From my own personal family experience and from the experiences of those in my classes, I have learned a great lesson. No matter how many strategies a parent uses to help his/her child with ADD/AD/HD, if the parent does not have a positive working relationship with the child, the strategies alone probably won't bring successful life outcomes.

I highly recommend Pudd'nhead Parenting to every parent who is searching for help in understanding why ADD kids act the way they do and how parents can help make their lives easier and more productive. My congratulations to Sterling Pratt for his positive contribution to parental efforts to help their kids.

Pudd'nhead Parenting is a book that EVERY parent should read, but especially those of children with ADD/ADHD. Pratt's common sense and positively focused approach will help create the kind of relationship you'd want to have with your children, no matter what issues were showing up!

What I also appreciate is that Pratt has been there. This isn't written by some clinician, but by someone who's lived through the hardships, and come out, not only surviving, but thriving... And he's parented children with ADD, as well. So he know what works and what doesn't. I wish every teacher, parent, and grandparent would read this book. It would certainly help us all! Thank you, Sterling Pratt, for offering this necessary help to all of us!!!

This is not the definitive book on ADD, attention deficient disorder, although the author does point to other important academic works in the field, that a parent beginning to find his or her way through the first phases of an ADD diagnosis would find helpful. This is an autobiographical work that Sterling Pratt has written concerning his own challenges with ADD both with his own diagnosis and his children's diagnosis.

I think this book covers an important niche in the field that the more academic works won't cover which is an autobiographical perspective. Sterling is also a member of the ADHD Coaches Organization.

I urge any parent with a child with ADD, any adult diagnosed with ADD, or even siblings of ADD children or adults to purchase this book. They would find it very helpful.

Pudd'nhead Parenting isn't just some doctor's theory about how to "deal with ADD"; it's a guide, a resource to be read again and again, in helping parents and children with ADD not only cope with but be successful in life. Mr. Pratt has drawn from his extensive research and personal experience with ADD in his own life and his children's. He offers practical advice and strategies that are meant to work on a day-to-day basis. He also gives encouragement and support, and hope that life with ADD can still be productive and fulfilling.

More About the Author

Sterling Pratt grew up with a debilitating dose of ADD and SAD. He has supported his family for the last thirty years working with large corporate computer systems. He and his wife, Terry, fell in love at fi rst sight in 1974. Since then they have worked together to raise six children, some of which are ADD, SAD and OCD. As part of that parenting effort Sterling has gained experience working with youth as a Scout Master, youth leader, and basketball and soccer coach. He has recorded his often bizarre experiences growing up with undiagnosed ADD in a separate book that will be released next year, called Pudd'nhead Adventures.
