Has excellent game strategy. Requires version 1.2 patch.
Once you overcome the Puerto Rico the PC Game's interface, the program's AI opponent is actually pretty good and challenging. The computer (expert AI) opponents win most games. This keeps playing it fun. The only better game is to play the original physical game against several expert friends, but that entails over an hour per game. The PC game takes about 5-10 minutes, so you'll get more practice at it.
Note Bene. This game was written for Windows 98/ME/XP, and have a modest demand for memory and hard drive space. However, you MUST upgrade to the Version 1.2 patch at www.eaglegames.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=EGL350 (go to Eaglegames web site, click on the "computer Games" on the left column, then click Puerto Rico the PC Game). Scroll down and click on 'Downloads' tab next to the description tab. Click on the "PuertoRicoUpdate_1.2.zip" link and save the download. Install it.
Without this upgrade, the CD installation will crash immedately after clicking on the icon on Windows 7. The error message is "Puerto Rico.exe has encountered a problem..." and the error report file details--
AppName: puerto.exe AppVer: ModName: oopd3d81.dll
ModVer: Offset: 00003f71
The version 1.2 patch fixes this.--Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast and Fun March 13, 2007
Verified Purchase
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
When you play the Puerto Rico board game, it takes at least an hour, and that is with experienced players who play reasonably quickly. The computer game takes 5-10 minutes per game -- it's amazingly fast. It's almost too fast, in fact; the first time I played, when the game was over I was like, "What? It's over already?"

But it is fun, and if you're addicted to the board game (which is much more satisfying), the PC game is a good way to get a quick fix. The gameplay is faithfully reproduced; it's just not as much fun as playing with other people.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Work, Support non-existant January 9, 2012
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
Got the PC version so I could play on trips. Would not load on my Windows 7 PC (just says incompatible). No updates or patches available on the website. Have tried to contact EagleGames.net with no response. Stay away unless you have Windows XP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works in Windows 7 Starter after update from website. January 21, 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This is more of a review of how to play the game in Windows 7 rather then a product review, that being said I have not yet played the game (but did run it) or the original physical game as of yet (but since they made it into a PC version I gave it 5 stars), but the game will run on Windows XP service pack 2 as is and after you go to [...] (website is on the game disc in case it is removed from this review) and get the update for the game it will run in Windows 7 Starter (with no other changes need) was not able to test in Windows 7 full edition but should work. When you go to the website in order to get the update just search for the game and there is a download tab to get the update. Hope that helps anyone who is on the fence on buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars Respectable Translation December 12, 2008

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
If you're a fan of the board game, this is a no-brainer. It's got hot-seat, LAN, and solo play (AI on the solo play is mediocre). The interface isn't what I would call polished, and it takes some getting used to. The resolution options are limited to older resolutions, so newer HD displays (particularly widescreen ones) may make it looks stretched, distored, fuzzy or small--but still passable. Graphics are so-so. But it's definitely worth having on the laptop for filler--and can be played online with friends. Takes the hassle out of setting up all the bits and managing them if you have a hankering to play but don't feel like handling all the bits.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work February 4, 2014

I tried running this on three separate computers (WIn XP, Win 7, and Win 8), and even with the hard-to-find patch, the game just would not run. I obtained a full refund from the retailer, who didn't even want it returned...

2.0 out of 5 stars Just NOT the Same as Board Game December 18, 2013
Verified Purchase
I find it so funny when gamers say the are experts playing Puerto Rico when all they do is play the PC and Online version of this great game.

THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS THE BOARD GAME! Long story short: Skip this PC Garbage and stick to the Table Board Game Version. For more details keep reading.

Here are the main differences between both versions:

1. Setting up the Board Game may take a long time, while setup is not necessary on the PC version unless you choose to play with the Game Expansion. I don't find this that much of a problem unless you are the only one left setting up the game.

2. Playing the Board Game version will take between one and two hours. You can play and entire game on the PC version in 15 minutes. I prefer the one hour game interaction with friends... but that's just me.

3. Strategy and game interaction is TOTALLY different between the two versions. Those who believe they can use their online strategy while playing with friends on a table will be terribly surprised when they get creamed by Table Veterans.

4. Playing the PC and Online versions of Puerto Rico is SCRIPTED. And sadly these versions have made many to come to the conclusion that the Board Game version is the same. This PC version has diluted and done more harm than good to this awesome game. The Board Game version is not scripted at all. You HAVE to keep your eye on the game or you WILL lose. Unless you are playing against morons, Ha!

5. Nothing beats hanging out with your friends while playing the Board Game version. Trying to predict their moves and change your strategy accordingly is priceless. You will read that many hate this game because of the unfair advantage to those who start fourth with Corn, etc.
