Kindergarten-Grade 3-- A carrot-haired, freckle-faced young girl is sent in search of tools for a tooth "ex-trac-tion" that her leg-pulling Uncle Tom teasingly suggests he will perform for her. Children who know what it is to lose a tooth will delight in this comically plotted and illustrated story. The colorful pencil drawings, with a hint of Gammell's style, are filled with plenty of independent action and detail, warmly depicting a multigenerational family gathering. The only suggestion of fear associated with the event is in the jacket illustration that shows a silhouetted figure poised with a hammer, screwdriver and pair of pliers--the very items the narrator is sent to gather. This jovial story is a natural for dramatization, and it will also serve as an entertaining introduction to dentistry. A different angle, it nicely complements McPhail's Bear's Toothache (Little, 1972), De Groat's Alligator's Toothache (Crown, 1977; o.p.), and Birdseye's Airmail to the Moon (Holiday, 1988). --Carolyn Vang, Monroe County Lib .
