Book Description

Calypso Chronicles September 23, 2004
When Calypso returns from Los Angeles to her English boarding school for the summer term, she is determined to fit in with the popular crowd. Her plan is to pretend her mother's gay assistant back home is her boyfriend. And to her surprise, the trick works...at least at first. She makes a whole batch of new friends, and even finds herself winning the unwritten contest to woo the prince at the boys' school next door. But one girl, Honey, undermines all her efforts. When Calypso and Prince Freddy end up in the tabloids and everything seems set to go down the drain, it's Calypso's parents and sense of humor that save her from utter humiliation.
A fast-paced, laugh-out-loud-funny look at fitting in while still standing out...

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10–Calypso, an LA teenager with movie-industry parents, attends a posh British boarding school. Having no title and no landed-gentry relatives, she has a hard time fitting in. So when she pretends that her mother's gay personal assistant is her new boyfriend, her popularity improves. Not only do the other girls make a fuss over her new guy, but the teen also gains self-confidence and the prince's attention during a fencing match. He starts calling her cell phone and they begin a budding romance. One big problem–Honey, one of the most popular girls in school, also has her eye on him, and she starts to make life truly miserable for Calypso. The story is jam-packed with posh toffs, true friends, late-night sneak outs for vodka drinking, silly fads, English slang, and plenty of boarding-school antics. Budding Anglophiles can add "pulling fit boys" (a phrase that basically translates to "making out with hot guys") to their lexicon, and will soak up the flood of upper-class British culture in this book. The story is milder than Louise Rennison's stories about Georgia Nicolson (HarperCollins) but similar in tone and style; fans of Cecily von Ziegesar's "Gossip Girl" series and Zoey Dean's "A-List" series (both Little, Brown) should enjoy it.–Angela J. Reynolds, Washington County Cooperative Library Services, Hillsboro, OR

5.0 out of 5 stars pull off the shelf!, February 22, 2005
This review is from: Pulling Princes (Calypso Chronicles) (Hardcover)
This was such a great book. Calypso Kelly is one of the few Americans at the posh british boarding school she attends. She has few friends: everyone loves to make fun of her accent. On top of all that, she is one of the few fencers, and she has no experience "pulling", or kissing, boys. Calypso takes things into her own hands, pretending that "gay Jay", her mom's PA, is her boyfriend in the States. This gives her an in with the most popular girls, and she is getting along quite nicely. She even attracts the attention of Prince Freddie, a royal! When the others discover this, one of the girls goes on the warpath, seeking to destroy Calypso's budding relationship. When she ends up in the tabloids, kissing Prince Freddie, her life gets even more crazy. Will Calypso be able to maintain her new friendships, defeat the evil girl, and win her prince?

5.0 out of 5 stars THE END, July 9, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Pulling Princes (Calypso Chronicles) (Hardcover)
this book was great! though many reviews have said, "its a bit confusing". i say "who says it shouldn't be?" when is the life of a teenager not "a little bit confusing"? it isn't very realistic, but that's what's fun about it. as nice as it is 2 read about realistic events, it's always fun 2 read something funny and "out there" once and a while.

after I read AND loved it, i recommended it 2 several of my friends. they all loved too. but in the end, it had us saying,
"WE WANT MORE!! THAT CAN'T BE THE END!!" and it isn't. it's just the beginning of a series that will b great. the other books are called, 'STEALING PRINCES' and 'DUELING PRINCES'. so b sure to check those out as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calypso Kelly, December 28, 2004
By
This review is from: Pulling Princes (Calypso Chronicles) (Hardcover)
This book is a very good read, a read one might call a beach read. It is centered around Calypso Kelly, the average teenage girl who desires to fit in and believes a good boyfriend will help her. It is light reading and perfect for anyone who is a pre-teen or teenager. It is filled with the normal teenage scenarios, royalty and of course, very strange names. Calypso? Arabella? Poppy? I believe this book is very good and I could not put it down! It was definitely one of my top 20 books I've ever read!
