Book Description

The title, “Pulp Fly” plays on the pulp fiction phenomenon of the early 20th century, when an explosion of periodicals published on cheap paper brought new and unconventional voices to a wide audience. History is being repeated in the 21st century with the advent of the e-book, an inexpensive way to bring new fly-fishing writing to “print.”

Some contributors to the project have written professionally for established fly-fishing publications such as The Drake, Gray’s Sporting Journal, Fly Rod & Reel, and Fly Fish Journal among others, while a few of the writers are making their voices heard for the first time.

Pulp Fly was created to offer a new venue for fresh perspectives on sporting topics, for talented writers emerging and well-known; to circumvent the cumbersome and expensive process of print book publishing and take advantage of new technologies to reach new audiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Collection of Characters. May 1, 2012
Fly fishing is about characters. The ones we play, the ones we meet, the ones we want to be. It makes stories somehow, because it (unlike any other thing I've experienced), weaves itself into the fabric of self...into our friendships, marriages, homes, and mental stability. Thus our struggles, hopes, dreams -- and yes, our dramatic failures -- can all be told through its guise.

Pulp Fly is a collection of just such characters and stories, by some of the best writers in fly fishing literature today. Well worth your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars cut to the chase February 17, 2013
Pulp fly is to reading what a first kiss is to a teen. Short, sweet and over all to soon, yet unforgettable even in its brevity. The mark of great writing is not that someone can fill 300 pages describing a leaf or whatnot, but rather that they can convey the same meaning and feeling in 300 words (or less). There is some darned fine writing in this book. Don't be surprised if you hear from some of these authors again as their writing careers take off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pulp doesn't equal cheap! July 9, 2012

I follow several of the contributing authors on their blogs and was very impressed as they moved into real fiction! Reading this book was like a good day fishing... Lots of big hard fighting fish (stories that keep you in the moment-short and sweet), ones that get away but you'll remember forever (bittersweet surprise endings), and a good sense of why you went fishing in the first place (escape, beauty, sporting). Hope to see a volume 2 soon!
