The region problem and Pulp Ultmate Live,
By
This review is from: Pulp: Ultimate Live (DVD)
When I first read these reviews, I wondered "what on earth is going on with Amazon and this new Pulp DVD?" Well, I got my DVD yesterday (having purchased it from another online retailer), and now I see what it's all about. Actually, the problem has nothing to do with Amazon - they are being misinformed, as are people who buy this DVD.The back of the DVD cover clearly states "Region: All." This means it is supposed to play in any region. But when I put the DVD in my Sony player/recorder, I immediately saw a message stating that the disc has an incompatible region code. Fortunately, I also have a region/format-free DVD player, so I put the disc in that, and it played just fine. Clearly, the folks who manufactured the DVD and its cover (at least the ones for North American distribution) have goofed up, and Pulp fans here have every reason to be ticked off. The band should be ticked off too, if they are aware of it. So, what are common people like you to do? To enjoy this DVD, you basically have two options. The first option is get yourself a region/format-free player - if you're a fan of British music, it's worth the investment (I got mine several months ago mostly so that I could watch a Saint Etienne DVD that hasn't been released in the U.S.). These players can be bought for 50-80 bucks. But you won't find them in your neighborhood big box electronics store (Hollywood frowns upon it). Do a search here at Amazon and you'll find some sellers from whom you can order one. Your second option is do some research on the internet and see if your player has a "hack." This is a code that you can enter on your remote which will essentially convert your region-restricted player to one that plays discs from any region. Despite the term "hack," I understand there's nothing illegal about doing this. Not all DVD players have a hack code, however. So is the "Pulp Ultimate Live" DVD worth all this trouble? Absolutely. It's two full concerts, and both are wonderful. One is in an intimate venue with a small but wildly enthusiastic audience, the other is outdoors before many thousands of people. I've only watched bits of each so far, but the picture quality is great, the sound is great, the band's performance kicks ass, and Jarvis....well, you know Jarvis. He's the coolest damn person on earth, right?

Wrong Region,
By
This review is from: Pulp: Ultimate Live (DVD)
Yes, this is an ALL region DVD which wont work on American DVD players. So, I just ordered an ALL region DVD player of Amazon for $85, which should show up early this week. However, this DVD does work in my computer so I watched it. It has 2 concerts on it, one of which I just realized I own on "The Park is Mine" VHS I bought a couple of years ago. This is still a good amount of PULP on one DVD featuring an important band in its prime. Worth getting, but like the PULP HITS DVD I doubt this will be released in a US format. I suggest getting an All region DVD player if you are into English music and movies.

This DVD contains 2 live concerts: T.H.I.S.F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.I.V.E. (1995) & The Park is Mine (1998) Performance is very good. One thing I didn't like in this release is the artwork. No book inside and very few information. It looks more like a dvd copy. The band is excellent in both shows and image and audio quality (also 5.1) is satisfactory.

Who are we mad at?,
This review is from: Pulp: Ultimate Live (DVD)
Ok, so i am one of many who just opened the package and got the infamous message that i was duped into thinking this was an all region dvd. but who's to blame for this widespread disease of misinformation? The manufacturers? The individual seller? Amazon? more importantly, WHY ARE THEY STILL SELLING? Stop the madness now or we blame the informed. That means anyone who sells this dvd knowing full well of the incorrect product information.

About the region problem, the best solution is to rip it and then remove the region code. There's various software out there that can do that. Then you can burn a copy that can be played on any DVD player. Note- I'm not advocating piracy. I did this with a DVD that I bought. But the biggest problem I have with the DVD is with The Feeling Called Live show. Compared to the original VHS (PAL) release, it's noticeably slower causing the pitch of the sound to be flat. Clearly they messed up the transfer from the original film to DVD. Fortunately, The Park is Mine doesn't suffer from this problem. I rate this 2 stars because of the pitch problem; if it didn't exist, I'd give it 5.

Amazon format mistake,

While I'm sure this DVD is amazing should you get it in a playable format, I'd suggest buying this from another vendor. Here the DVD is listed as region 1 (though it should be region 0); however, Amazon sent me regions 2-6, and are being inefficient about rectifying the situation. Maybe they've fixed the problem now, but I just want to prevent anyone else from dealing with such a mess.

I told my boyfriend to buy me this DVD and when I get It I can't even watch it, because it is not a region 1 DvD (only plays in USA or Canada) it is a Region 2 or 6 DVD. Don't buy this product if you don't have a dvd player that plays all regions or your going to get ripped off like I did!!!!!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pulp: Ultimate Live (DVD)
I agree with the other unfortunate people who ordered this DVD from Amazon. I was sent a region 2 DVD, and had to return it. I still have not received the correct DVD. It's a shame, because I've waited for this to be released in the US for a very long time.

I have to add my 2 cents here and say that when I bought this DVD I had no idea that it wouldn't play! I agree with the other people on here that have had the same misfortune as I have. I have tried to play this in 2 computers, 2 dvd players, and my xbox, only to be told that it is not the correct region for my player, even tho on the back it states REGION: ALL. What a rip-off!Shame on you, Amazon, for denying us Pulp fans a true gem of a film but one that we can't watch and enjoy! |
