Biography

Pulp is the vehicle of geeky English auteur Jarvis Cocker, who formed the band with Sheffield schoolmates in 1978 at the age of 15, but didn't achieve success until the 90s. Before then they tried many different styles, and many different band-members, but with frustratingly similar results - widespread apathy. One exception was Radio 1 DJ John Peel, who granted Pulp a number of live radio… Read more in Amazon's Pulp Store

Editorial Reviews

02 Re-issue opf their 1983 debut album, a gentle, mainly acoustic album that occasionally touches on the majestic, theatrical ballads of Scott Walker, as well as the stark, folky song poems of Leonard Cohen. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for post 1993 fans, December 5, 1999

If you got into Pulp with His n' Hers or the subsequent albums, you will not really enjoy this album. All songs are acoustic. Except for Jarvis, none of the current band members are on this album. While by itself it is a decent album, in comparison to the Pulp we know and love, it fizzles. If you want good Pulp, go post '93.

3.0 out of 5 stars not bad..., February 12, 1999

Well, it may sound absolutely nothing like anything else the band's ever done, but this really isn't a terrible album. There's a kind of charming innocence about it that we haven't seen in any of their later work (no irony here), and while the songs aren't exactly awe-inspiring, tunes like My Lighthouse, Joking Aside, and Love Love are good enough that the Pulp devotee should hear them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely great!, July 3, 2001

This deserves six stars. Lighthouse is one of my favorite songs ever. The lyrics on the whole album are top notch as usual, and the relatively lower production value is charming for a band that has come such a long way since. I'd recommend it to anyone.
