Nice looking watch, a few flaws, July 21, 2010
This review is from: Pulsar Men's PS2001 21 Jewel Mechanical Self-Winding Battery-Free Automatic Brown Leather Band Stainless-Steel Case Blue Dial Watch (Watch)
I was considering this watch as an alternative to the more expensive Citizen EcoDrive 5250, because I didn't need all the bells and whistles of the Citizen, and the Pulsar's lower price point was rather attractive. I'm no watch connoisseur; I was looking for a first-time semi-formal/formal watch, preferably one with a blue colored face. For those of you unfamiliar with Pulsar, it is a subsidiary company of Seiko.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: The most striking feature of the Pulsar is the blue face, which is a very beautiful blue hue in all types of lighting. I like the brown leather band, which exhibits white contrast stitching for a more sophisticated look (not unlike that of the Citizen). The face has a small circular inset near the 9 o'clock position, the inset being a window to the interior mechanism of the watch. This inset is an interesting and unique feature. The hours are not marked by digits, rather they appear as bars, which make time reading slightly difficult. However, the outer circumference of the watch face is ringed by seconds markings, which helps somewhat to discern the time. A watch at this price point could have used a calendar, but that's not a big dealbreaker.
Two additional things bothered me about this watch, besides the slight difficulty in reading the time. First, there is a noticeable heft to this piece. The metal used here is stainless steel, not titanium, and the weight is definitely noticeable on the wrist. Second, the luminous hour/minute hands don't work very well since the hour ticks are not illuminated at all! Only the hour/minute hands are luminescent, which isn't very helpful. A special light-absorbing paint is used to create the luminescent hour/minute hands, so if your watch isn't exposed to light for at least 10 minutes, then you will have difficulty reading the time at night.
PROS:
- Relatively cheaper price
- Beautiful blue face
- Contrast leather stitching
- Overall design is clean and simple
- Water resistant
- Elegant look
- Automatic operation, no battery needed
CONS:
- No calendar
- Bars instead of numbers make time reading difficult
- Watch on the heavy side
- Only hour and minute hands are luminescent, making time reading difficult at night
