Book Description

March 28, 1998
AT ELLIS HOSPITAL, MURDER IS MAKING THE ROUNDS.

When sweet young Chloe, everybody's favorite nurse, dies in the recovery room after a routine appendectomy, nurse Adel Coutant's suspicions are aroused. It's the third sudden death among the hospital staff in a year, and Adel is certain one of her coworkers is behind the onslaught. But who in this pressure-cooker workplace--where drugs, sex, and odd spiritual practices serve to ease tension--bears the mark of true madness? As Adel starts probing, the fever of fear soars, and a brilliant maniac watches and waits. . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Heron's (Condition Critical) latest is the first in a new medical suspense series, but after a graphic, gripping introduction it drops into an overstocked plot. Nurses and doctors are being murdered in a hospital outside of San Francisco, and it's up to Adele Monsarrat, R.N., (and her rickety car, the "Beast") to solve the crime. Heron, herself a former nurse, brings considerable medical and technical knowledge and terminology which sounds great, even when readers aren't sure what it means. Adele, a strong and sometimes amusing character, is forced to investigate such wildly bizarre creations such as the insane New Age nurse, and the demonic hospital pastor and her Green Beret husband. Heron focuses so much on the issues of nursing and the single woman, however, that one forgets that this is supposed to be a thriller.

This story is very entertaining if you have read any of Echo Heron's nonfiction work. If you enjoy medical thrillers then this book won't let you down. Echo Heron is an amazing person with a lot of experience. Her humor saturates this book and makes you love Adele.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, February 1, 1999
This review is from: Pulse (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the second Echo Heron book I've read and Adele Monsarrat is fast becoming one of my favorite characters. Along with her vegetarian dog, Nelson, she provides wit and humor in her crime solving antics. A twisting plot had me guessing right up to the end. Just when I was sure I had it all figured out, another possibility presented itself. An excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read...couldn't put in down, gets your Pulse pumping, August 12, 1999

I really loved this book. It is the first of Echo Heron's books I have ever read, but I'm glad I stumbled across it. I will definitely be going for the next one. She creates the characters and makes you feel you know them. She did a very good job of leading you to many assumptions as to whodunit. Then just as you thought you had it figured out, she presented another lead that totally threw you for a loop. You never really suspect the one who turns out guilty. I have no reason to thrash this book at all. And the plot and story line aren't that far fetched, with the world today. There are many anti-abortion activists who believe it is right to kill one human for killing another. I do not agree with abortion, but I guess to each his own. You really need to read this book.
