If Pulse is any indication, I can hardly wait for the Chess Team's next adventure,
By
This review is from: Pulse (A Jack Sigler Thriller) (Hardcover)
Like many Jeremy Robinson fans, I was introduced to his writing through his first, self-published time traveling novel, 'The Didymus Contingency' and LOVED it. The idea of creating an action/adventure tale set around time travel that also happens to feature the Son of God?? Who could have conceived the success that followed? I have known that 'Pulse' has been in the works for quite some time now, and after finishing 'Kronos' I was really chompin' at the bit for this one.
Guess what? Jeremy Robinson does NOT disappoint. With each successive story you literally can SEE the improvements happening to his immense storytelling creativity and talent...and they are on FULL display here, I assure you. Who could map out even a semi-believable story featuring Greek Mythology and modern genetics and weave them together in such a way that doesn't make it sound silly? I'll tell you who: Jeremy Robinson. While I am NOT a geneticist, the obvious research that went into this novel is quite apparent and I am sure someone who knows far more than I do about the possibility of genetic organ regeneration can spot (if any) some flaws--but I certainly couldn't. It was hard to say where actual technology left off and wild imagination began in some places. Oh, and the action?? Well 'Pulse' has been compared to Matthew Reilly's books as of late, and although I don't believe Jeremy came too close to the all-out adrenaline/steroid rush of Reilly, he certainly comes within throwing distance...and for someone like me, that is really great news. Action, suspense and a great deal of 'What If' seems to play a central role here in 'Pulse'...in fact, if I were to compare this to anything else available, I'd say it's a cross between X-Files, Indiana Jones and Rainbow Six. I simply LOVED 'Pulse' from the first page and for those out there looking for the next Action King to spend some time with, you would be making a smart move to get to know Jeremy Robinson NOW--oh yeah, and go pick up his earlier stuff, too...you won't be wasting a single penny. Kudos to Jeremy...now, enough playing around--get back to work on that sequel!!

Pulse Pounding Page Peeling Publication,
By R.W. Ridley (Charleston, SC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pulse (A Jack Sigler Thriller) (Hardcover)
If you are looking for a book that will give you heart palpitations and reads with the pace and energy of an edge of your seat video game, Jeremy Robinson's Pulse is the book for you. Simply put, it is a good time read. An evil billionaire sets out to discover the key to immortality and manages to unleash the wrath of the mythical beast, Hydra. A Delta Force team of soldiers is called in to fight various badies that include humans who can regenerate body parts thanks to their modified DNA that includes Hydra juice. Gun battles, hand to hand combat, monster mauling, it's all here. I can't recommend this book enough.
I've read and enjoyed a number of Robinson's novels and I think this is his best. He is firing on all cylinders here, providing a page turner to the nth degree. If you combined the DNA from some of the best authors in this genre (Rollins, Crichton, Reilly, etc.) and created some mad scientist concoction, you would end up with Jeremy Robinson clacking away on his computer keyboard churning out action-packed prose. Pulse is the perfect summer read.

Interesting premise but mediocre writing,

Pulse is a mix between Herodotus, Jurassic Park, 28 Days Later, and a sub-par Tom Clancy. The premise is interesting but Mr. Robinson needs to develop as a writer because as of now his prose is hackneyed and it would be overgenerous to say that his characters are cardboard cutouts lifted out of any cr*ppy video game or C movie. I had flashes of the A-Team (TV show not movie) running through my head as thousands of rounds are fired at our protagonists and not one is hit whilst they run amok and kill dozens of their foes. As to the villain, well, considering he is bald all that is needed for him to be Dr. Evil is a Nehru jacket and degree from Evil Medical School...I mean seriously, right down to the freakin' lair in a Volcano.
Again, the premise of the novel is very interesting and a lot of fun could have been had with it. The best parts are when Mr. Robinson exposes bits of the ancient back story and lets our imaginations run with it, the part regarding the ancient landing in Peru was easily the best in the book. The worst are the dialogue, character development, and, well, everything else. Cool idea, crappy execution. Keep plugging at it.

Wild Ride,
This review is from: Pulse (Chess Team) (Kindle Edition)
Pulse is a wild ride from the first page through the end. If you're looking for a non-stop action thriller, then you've found a good one here. Robinson uses a "Chess Team" of special forces group to spin a science fiction tale that ties back into the old mythology of the Hyrda. If you read this one and like it, be sure to check out "Instinct". It's the second chess team novel and is equally good.

Not a Lot of Depth Here, but its Mostly Good Fun,
By
This review is from: Pulse (A Chess Team Adventure) (Hardcover)
You'll enjoy PULSE if you like over-the-top adventure stories. Conversely, if you enjoy realism and character depth, you'll find this effort wanting.
PULSE features a five-member Delta force team that seems to have unlimited ability and resources. In this novel, they battle an immensely wealthy CEO who has apparently discovered an ancient secret to eternal life -- a secret that's related to the Hydra monster of Greek legend. Most of this book consists of a long series of action scenes, as the Delta Team fights with the CEO's forces, and eventually the Hydra monster itself. All of this is pretty silly stuff, but author Robinson mostly pulls it off. His prose is highly readable and the book is fast paced. If you don't mind the comic book plot, you should have fun with this one. It qualifies as a guilty pleasure, like the pulp fiction of earlier generations. The major downside with PULSE is its flat characterization. Instead of one central character, Robinson has five of them, and he keeps shifting viewpoints every other chapter. In the end, none of these Delta Force people struck me as fully developed human beings. Hopefully, Robinson will be able to flesh them out better in later installments of the series. In short, PULSE is good if you're looking for a B-movie kind of literary experience. Fans of James Rollins or Matthew Reilly might want to give this a try.

Ray Harryhausen meets 007,
This review is from: Pulse (A Chess Team Adventure) (Hardcover)
This is a first rate wild ride action thriller with outlandish creatures and extreme characters. However I disagree with reviewers who criticize Robinson's prose style. This book is, in my opinion, better written than many others in this genre. For example, I would read Robinson over Rollins any day. I find Robinson's character writing more compelling and his stories far more imaginative than many of his peers. His prose style is inventive and lightning fast with great visualization. However the violence was a bit gratuitous for my taste. If you require hard scientific believability, then look elsewhere. If you want an entertaining story that drives at breakneck speed, then give this a try.

I was introduced to Jeremy Robinson after recommending a few Matthew Reilly books to some co-workers. They had just finished Pulse and let me give it a whirl. From the moment I started reading it, I could not put it down. Pulse is a very fast paced military thriller that mixes the Chess Team (Delta outta Ft. Bragg) with Greek Mythology. The action is almost non-stop and the ending will have you wanting more. I'm very excited to see that the follow-up for Pulse is getting ready to be released. If you are a fan of Matthew Reilly, James Rollins, or Steve Alton, this book is for you!

Mushy Leftovers?,
By
This review is from: Pulse (A Chess Team Adventure) (Hardcover)
Imagine "Clash of the Titans" meets "The A-Team" meets "The Bourne Identity" and you'll have an idea of what you're getting into here. Jeremy Robinson mixes so many ingredients that I worried this thriller would be mushy leftovers, but he balances the flavors with astounding ease and manages to serve up a rousing meal.
The Chess Team is a squad of Delta operatives, each of them using a tag name from the chessboard, and each of them deadly and well-trained. They are called into action when rumors surface of an ancient force unearthed in remote Peru. Why are Greek inscriptions found so far from Greece? Is it possible that Hercules was a real man, his name listed on the log of the sunken "Argo"--think "Jason and the Argonauts." The questions come pouring in quickly, leading toward the concept of the Hydra and immortality. If such a power existed, of course some mad scientist or capitalist would feel compelled to take control, and that's what happens in this book. The man at the reins needs the help of a Dr. Pierce to see his plans to fruition, and Pierce just happens to be a boyhood friend of Chess Team's King. Suddenly, the team's race to save mankind from horrifying consequences becomes personal. It sounds like a mishmash, and it is. But it's a gloriously unfettered, fun-loving mishmash. This is not Vince Flynn trying to convince you with shallow details and characters. It's not Michael Crichton trying to convince you with scientific prowess. To his credit, Robinson's research is a lot deeper than it may seem on the surface, but he never lets that get in the way of his imagination. He brushes against some ethical issues of scientific research, then blasts away with all barrels and hopes you'll join him for the ride. If you like chases, epic fights, weaponry, technology, and ancient conspiracies, you'll enjoy "Pulse." Sure, every woman is beautiful and every man is a fighting machine; sure, we would expect any average archaeologist to recognize Greek; and, yes, we see most of the surprises coming. Despite all that, I found myself caught up in this book's exuberance. Well done, Jeremy. I'm looking forward to the "Instinct," due out any month now.

Great Book,
By Ginger Nuts of Horror (somewhere in time) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pulse (A Chess Team Adventure) (Hardcover)
A novel along the lines of Patient Zero by Jonathan Maberry. Seem idea, a crack team of soldiers, fighting against unstoppable foes. Whilst this novel treads very familiar ground, it carries of the story with a great deal more success than Mayberrys work. This is a work of pure pulp escapism, a reccomeneded read for fans of this genre.

This is the 3rd Jeremy Robinson book I have read so I had some expectations as to what I would get when I bought Pulse. Needless to say I was not disappointed. Even though the premise behind the "monster" in this book is far fetched Jeremy writes it in such a way to make it believable. The heroes, in way of the Chess Team, were a fun bunch (although they could have been drawn out a little more but I hope that I will happen in follow up novels). The action was non-stop from the very beginning and overall this book was just fun to read. Don't expect a book that will be viewed as great literature by history but if you want something to entertain you and keep you reading long into the night then this book is for you.
