Editorial Reviews

About the Artist

Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) is a composer, performer, violinist, and band-leader who seamlessly blends funk, rock, hip-hop and classical music into a new sonic vision that is far out and creative in another world. He is a classical-urban ambassador for the next generation with a widening international audience.

Voted '#3 Best Classical Moment of 2003' by the New York Times and raved by critics from classical and popular music fields alike, DBR has collaborated with Philip Glass, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Savion Glover, Vernon Reid, DJ Spooky, Susan Sarandon, Cassandra Wilson, and an array of orchestras and chamber ensembles. His dramatic soul-inspiring pieces range from orchestral scores to energetic chamber works to rock songs and electronica, all embracing modern musical genres woven with a multicolored spectrum of popular music. His 9-piece band, DBR & THE MISSION, features an amplified string quartet, drum kit, keyboards, vocalist, DJ, and laptopist. The orchestras of Dallas, Memphis, San Antonio, and St. Louis have performed or commissioned his works, and Bill T. Jones and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s regularly collaborate with him---DBR is the Music Director of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and Assistant Composer-in-Residence of the OSL.

DBR has performed his arrangements of Cassandra Wilson’s 'Glamoured' with the jazz vocalist and her quintet while conducting the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and Buffalo Philharmonic; rocked with DJ Spooky at the Lincoln Center Summer Festival; and composed music for and performed in the European premiere of Bill T. Jones' 'ANOTHER EVENING' at the RomaEuropa Festival in Italy. As Artist-in-Residence at Arizona State University, DBR collaborated and performed with Philip Glass in 'SEEN AND HEARD: Philip Glass and Daniel Roumain Together on Screen, Stage and in Sound'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pulsing IS what it is...PULSING!, May 15, 2006

Pulsing IS what it is...PULSING!

Orbit, with its cascading rhythms and melodies, prepares you to enter the musical world of that which can only be described as "Planet DBR"!

At first, the tranquil and slow-paced vibes of Imprint command a mournful presence. Then suddenly, the somber notes are transformed into a climatic born-again frenzy. Ultimately, the song slowly drowns back to the place from which it rose.

Pulsing seems fitting as the DBR personal anthem. With its strobe-light musical appeal, this signature tune could be the "laser-light sword fight" of classical music composer combusting into contemporary hip-hop violinist. This musical explosion clears the way for futuristic musical rhythms to come.

Fusing human voice with musical overtures, Listen forces the listener to do just that. LISTEN. But we do so with a different set of ears attuned only to DBR frequencies!

Cotillion 1, my personal favorite, is incredibly delicate. This musical sanctuary creates a safe place. A place where one can journey with eyes closed and arrive at the very core of sacred humanness.

The piercing notes of Grounded don't let you forget that DBR is here with a message that is meant to be heard LOUD and CLEAR!

Wanted is wonderfully aquatic in nature. As I immerse myself in the musical notes, I am reminded of an echoing underwater heartbeat. A heartbeat that transforms itself into the lifeline that sustains and feeds my malnourished soul.

Cotillion 2: see Cotillion 1 notes!

Having seen DBR perform Filter, all I can say it that there is nothing like hearing the real thing! As I listen to this piece, I close my eyes and can still see him clearly, his movements and sounds forever etched in my memory.

Finally, I am always touched by DBR's inclination to tell the untold human stories of our times. For me, Veronica and Vincent does just that. It captures a moment in time that desperately needed a voice. This piece stands true to its storytelling appeal, especially in light of its similarity to Nothin' (Mama Mix) heard on DBR's previous CD I, Composer.

As I said before (and I'll say it again) Pulsing IS what it is...PULSING!

This review is from: Pulsing (Audio CD)
This is a great CD. I bought it after seeing DBR in concert, and i am very pleased with the album. It has a range of interesting styles, from upbeat drums to more relaxing sounds - truly a variety of musicality and instruments. If you like to try new musical styles, definitely get this CD. It is a winner.

Got a glimpse of his music on the national news and ordered a cd rather spontaneously - certainly no regret there - this music is original and the range is from soothing to "pulsing". I'm glad I found this artist.
