I have had these for 2 weeks now. I installed them on my 2006 Jetta 2.5L. My average MPG has gone from 23 to 28 in the very little I have driven in the past 2 weeks. I think there may be a slight performance increase but I'm not sure yet. The concept is solid, though there is a lot of skepticism about these, do know that there are 2 versions of these. There is the OLD version which retails for about $24, and the new which is around $12. The old models are troublesome so be sure to get the new ones. With PROPER GAPPING, and experienced installation, they should work flawlessly.

Pulstar Pulse Plugs Review,
This review is from: Pulstar be1i Iridium Pulse Spark Plug, Pack of 1 (Automotive)
I have had great results from the Pulstar plugs. I recently (Spring 2010) installed them in my 92' Lexus ES300 as well as in my 92' Jeep Wrangler 4 cylinder. In both vehicles I have experienced fuel economy gains of approximately 10%. The Lexus now averages 23mpg in the city which I think is pretty good for a 18 year old 6 cylinder engine. Also, I averaged 23 mpg on the highway for the Jeep during a recent long road trip. Both vehicles now seem to idle more smoothly. My father-in-law has had similar improvements in his 2002 Honda Civic (I think he now averages 37mpg). Overall I am very happy with these plugs.

This product is not worth the metal it's made out of. Sure, the concept sounds great and is probabally sound. I did notice a small improvement in throttle response, that's it.
The real problem with theese plugs is that the ceramic housing cracks and falls apart. Sometimes this happens on 1st install, sometimes on the road, sometimes a few plugs might not crack. When the porcelain shatters during install/removal, you can wind up with little porcelain bits falling into the combustion chamber! Yikes! The company did acknowledge some problems with their "first run" of production plugs and claims now that won't happen anymore... For $12 or more per plug who wants to find out? I think the porcelain layer is just too thin and can't take the hot/cold cycles and/or the torque of being seated into the engine. Too bad, I removed all of the plugs and went with platinum OEM plugs. Never seen another spark plug fall apart like this one LOL!

Snake Oil Plugs,
By Isletek (Big Island, Hawaii) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pulstar be1i Iridium Pulse Spark Plug, Pack of 1 (Automotive)
As a professional automotive tech for over 35 years I have seen these kind of spark plugs come and go.
The claims of performance and mileage improvements are always the same song...along with the high price. The improvement people might get is from removing worn out plugs and installing these...any type of "New" plug would be better than a worn out one. The other gains are more psychological to make up for the high price paid for them. I have removed these plugs from many vehicles after the customer installed them and then had a driveability problem. They all had at least one or more plug failure, some had cracked porcelain on the combustion side. The customer is usually surprised to find that the repair is to install Original Equipment Manufacturer made spark plugs and toss the "Snake Oil Plugs". Stay away from any/all other plugs other than OEM.

Great Plugs,

I bought a set and put them in my 1995 BMW 525i, all I can say is AWESOME. I was driving over 260 miles a day, getting 25-26 mpg. Changing the plugs, and that was all i did, my mileage when up to 30 mpg, and even saw 32 mpg on a 400 mile trip. My car normally got about 3 segments of my trip before I had to fill up, (vapors, DTE was at 0-2 miles) and after I was able to get 4 segments and still have about 20 miles on my DTE output.
I strongly recommend them, and would be purchasing it again for any other vehicles that I can use them in. The vehicle preforms much better, and even the mechanics that work on it noted that it out preforms similar vehicles.

I installed a set of these plugs in my '02 Volvo V70 Cross Country wagon with 2.4 liter turbo in-line five cylinder engine. I felt a drastic increase in bottom-end torque immediately. The car would get up and go like never before. I was shocked at the difference. Gas mileage did not increase. So after 1.5 years of use, today I removed the plugs and had a look at them. I've never seen such cleanliness on used plugs before. I kind of wondered if the injectors were even pulsing because they were so clean. Just a light tan color all over. Perfect. Re-installed plugs, car's still running great. But, the bottom-end torque I mentioned seems to have waned a bit. I wonder if the plugs are not firing as strongly as they did when new? Do they have a diminishing rate of return on spark power because the internal capacitor is degrading? Not sure. Best way to tell is to replace them and see what happens, but I can't afford that right now.
Next car: '82 Porsche 928 with 4.5 liter V8. Installed the plugs, car fired right up, and ran nicely. No complaints at all. Later, I bought a can of Amsoil PowerFoam intake and combustion area cleaner that you spray into the intake while the engine is idling. Empty the can, shut off the engine for 15 minutes, fire back up and drive to blow out the deposits. Brilliant product, but incompatible with Pulstar plugs. After I had fired the engine back up, I tried to drive the car, got about fifty feet, car began rumbling and losing power quickly. I turned it around and limped back to my parking spot. I almost didn't make it. I scratched my head for ten minutes, then finally realized I had fouled the plugs with the PowerFoam. I commenced pulling the plugs for inspection. Sure enough, the plugs were all fouled. The PowerFoam had coated the plugs and burned on leaving a thick black goo which prevented the plugs from firing. Normal spark plugs operate at a high enough temp that they can easily burn off the PowerFoam. But not these. They get hot enough to bake the PowerFoam onto themselves. I returned the plugs and got my money back. So, these are nice plugs that work great, but beware......do not use Amsoil PowerFoam if you're running Pulstar plugs.

Worked at firs however the product want to increase gap and creates more issues that could fool a mechanic . The reason I am saying this when I installed this product on my jetti it was fine untill I got going and then my check engine light came on. When I diagnosed the issue it was a miss fire. So I pulled them and replaced again,"ouch" they aren't that cheep! Went with a model of plug that has a larger center focal point would recommend that you too do this.

If you don't follow instructions, don't complain! LOL,
This review is from: Pulstar be1i Iridium Pulse Spark Plug, Pack of 1 (Automotive)
If you don't gap them properly, strange things will happen (such as blowing out an ignition coil and throwing misfire codes on multiple plugs). I learned the hard way! Luckily, I didn't drive my vehicle too far from home. Whew!! They come pre-gapped at .40 and my vehicle called for .44. Once I got back home from the test drive, I looked up the proper gap for my vehicle and gapped them accordingly and re-installed the plugs as recommended. WOW!! WHAT A GREAT DIFFERENCE THAT MADE!! More power! However, I can't tell if the MPG has changed any since I've only driven no more than 100 miles so far. Filled up my tank tonight and will set the trip meter to see how far I get on a full tank throughout the week. An important thing to remember is that these are NOT spark plugs--they are Pulse Plugs! There's a huge difference! You are NOT supposed to use the same tools that you normally use for installing spark plugs to install Pulse Plugs. Actually, you can use your normal spark plug socket to start them into the threads but after that, you MUST use a deep socket (that won't touch or crack the ceramic part of the plug) to tighten it down. BE VERY CAREFUL not to drop them--they are very fragile! Before you install, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND reading the little 1 page installation guide. I ignorantly made the mistake of installing them the same way I install all standard spark plugs and without reading the installation guide to top it off. Oops! Pulse Plugs come with a special grease that you MUST apply to the ceramic part of the plug--if you want to know why, it's in the instructions! :) DO NOT FORGET to disconnect the negative terminal on your battery while installing!! You need to reset your ECU so that it can learn about the new Pulse Plugs you just installed! I am sure that mechanics naturally know everything about installing standard spark plugs, but be sure to remind them that the plugs are NOT standard spark plugs--they are PULSE PLUGS! There's a slightly different procedure to install Pulse Plugs and if you have never installed Pulse Plugs according to their installation guide, then you won't know how to install PULSE PLUGS! Be very CERTAIN to read and understand the installation guide before you do anything! I hope I have made my point clear. :) Anyway, my vehicle drives great now and feels a bit more powerful too! I'm happy. |
