5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Pump
WOW! "Pump" is such an incredible record. It is probably their best comeback record(for seventies record, buy "Rocks"). I think that not only are the big singles hits, like "Love in an Elevator," "Janie' Got a Gun," "The Other Side, " and "What it Takes," but all the B-side stuff is just as amazing...

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't compare to Aerosmith's usual stuff.
The best song on the cd in my opinion is "What it Takes." The rest is alright, but not hard rockin' enough like the Aero I like.

WOW! "Pump" is such an incredible record. It is probably their best comeback record(for seventies record, buy "Rocks"). I think that not only are the big singles hits, like "Love in an Elevator," "Janie' Got a Gun," "The Other Side, " and "What it Takes," but all the B-side stuff is just as amazing. "Monkey on My Back," relating to Steven's former drug problem, is a nice driving rock song. This album has alot of cool hooks in it complimented with a great rhythm sound from Kramer, Hamilton, and Whitford(how is it their stuff gets overlooked?). Many intros begin the songs:"Going down," "Water Song," "Dulcimer Stomp;" It's all great! Aerosmith definately steps out on a limb and creates stuff totally never done before. Seriously, if you're looking to start your collection or looking to further it, buy "Pump." I guarantee you won't be dissapointed! Also, check out the video "The Making of Pump." It gives alot of background info on the creating process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aerosmith's Best Besides Toys, May 18, 2000
This review is from: Pump (Audio CD)
As I stated above, this is Aerosmith's second best record. There is simply not a weak moment on this album. Aerosmith had just regained their former prosperity and fame with Permanent Vacation, and then took a huge risk by releasing Pump, the most adventurous and experimental album of their career. How so? One listen to this album and you'll see what I'm talking about. First off, there are all the unique instruments played here, socially aware lyrics like in Janie, and some lyrics that are bound to offend. Even if you've heard half this album on the radio, the songs are all better on here, as they have cool intros (played with the aforementioned unique instruments) to compliment them. There is also a "hidden" jam after What It Takes ends. Now for the songs... they are all good, but the singles (Janie, Elevator, Other Side, What It Takes) are all great, of course, but some of the lesser-known songs are just as good. The opening combo of Young Lust (great song with an awesome ending, courtesy of Joey Kramer) and F.I.N.E. (more sleazy lyrics for our schoolboy's pleasure) start the album off on a high note, and it never lets up. Voodoo Medicine Man is a great song also. It is simply impossible not to love this album. Buy it already!

4.0 out of 5 stars Is EVERYBODY here crazy?, September 27, 1999

Pump is a great album and well worth your time but....

Amazon has THIS as the greatest Aerosmith ever?

You actually believe Pump is better than Toys or Rocks?

They're only 2 of the best Rockin' albums of the last 25 years.

I think you guys are doing the stuff Aerosmith says they don't do anymore.

You also watch too much MTV.

Oh well....enjoy anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss The Best, July 24, 2001
By
This review is from: Pump (Audio CD)
Hard rocking, but with great lyrics and wisecracking fun to boot. I'd compare Pump to a series of short stories set to rock - every tune has a theme to it. Besides the solid hits, there are some hidden gems that are real wild screams: Monkey on My Back harks to their past addictions; Don't Get Mad-Get Even is dark humor; FINE is too raunchy for most radio stations! Hoodoo is a bluesy riot! A Celtic flavor in Dulcimer Stomp and American Indian flavor in Medicine Man. Doesn't have the commercial aspect of later efforts. All clever, gutsy tunes that rock Aerosmith style!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pump It UP!, March 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pump (Audio CD)
I've gotta agree with the previous reveiwer's suspicions of "Pump". I also thought that the only really good songs on the album would be the "big three" (Janie, Elevator, and The Other Side), but boy was I wrong about this monumental Aerosmith album. Of course this isn't meant to knock the hits, hey they're "hits" for a reason, right? "The Other Side"'s crammed with some heavy duty riffing remniscent of "Mama Kin" and "Love in an Elevator" has the best hook of all time (I just love Joey's double bass stomp at that part of the song!). However, "Janie's Got a Gun" is still the killer - even after almost ten years! The boys were in rare form when they recorded that one!! The rest of the tunes on "Pump" hold their own against the hits - especially "F.I.N.E" and "My Girl". Finish all this off with "What it Takes" (one of the few 90's Aerosmith ballads that actually works), and you've got yourself a bonafide winner from the Boston Bad Boys!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential, indeed!, April 22, 2011

This review is from: Pump (Audio Cassette)
Did you ever have a treasure in your possession but you never realized how much of a treasure it really was? That's what happened to me with Aerosmith's "Pump" recently.

I grew up hearing the group's 1970s recordings - "Dream On," "Walk This Way" (when the original was resurrected in the late-80s with Run D.M.C.'s cover) - and I was excited when they made their mainstream comeback after "Walk This Way," but I was blown away when "Pump" was released in 1989.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating: 1989 was a great year for pop music: Tom Petty, Phil Collins, Billy Joel, Janet Jackson, De La Soul, The B-52s, Madonna, Debbie Gibson, and Great White were just a few who put out great end-of-the-decade music. "Pump" was another outstanding contribution, and it stands out for great songwriting, vocals (Steven Tyler rocks forever!), and accompanying videos that have stood the test of time.

At first, I liked the songs that were MTV hits ("Love in an Elevator," "Janie's Got a Gun"), but it took me until 20 years later to really appreciate this album from start to finish. Now I can add this to my short list of albums that I like from beginning to end. Every song is not only good, the sound is not dated at all - and not many albums can pull off that feat.

I always got a kick out of "Don't Get Mad, Get Even" thought that "Voodoo Medicine Man" was underrated, and get the chills everytime I listen to "Janie's Got a Gun." "What It Takes" was the perfect ending to this masterpiece (as well as the extra instrumentation at the end of the audio cassette tape).

The days when people actually wrote and played music and sang were great ones. - Donna Di Giacomo

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Rock And Roll Lives Forever, February 12, 2007
This review is from: Pump (Audio CD)
I give credit to Aerosmith...after so many years of writing by themselves to realize that in order to stay on top of the game they needed some outside contributions I'm sure was not an easy thing to admit
but thankfully they did and the results were some of the greatest music not only of the late 80s early 90s but possibly some of the best in rock

I know,I am in the minority liking this period of Aerosmith far more than classic 70s era Aerosmith but I'm sorry the classic stuff was full of hit or miss albums, usually 2 or 3 great songs and 5 or so ho hum cuts...not so on Permanent Vacation,Get A Grip,Nine Lives or this one Pump...this is pure songwriting genius, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry and the rest of the band function perfectly when in the framework of very well written song structures
Young Lust - a great rocking tribute to the best thing about being young
F.I.N.E - this one is awesome,should have been a single,great lyrics too
Love In An Elevator - yeah it was overplayed, but there's a reason,it is that darn good! This song rocks and to all the Desmond Child haters out there I say this,in 50 years his songs will STILL be appreciated and sung and how many Nirvana songs will anyone remember? Enough said..Love In An Elevator has clever lyrics and a melody so powerful it will stick with ya for days
Monkey On My Back - a bit more of the classic sounding Aerosmith, good tune
Janie's Got A Gun - Great song, very filled with atmosphere
The Other Side - Filled with hooks and grooves, you gotta at least respect 'em for that..this song rocks
My Girl - The weakest song..a bit on the simple side
Don't Get Mad Get Even - I LOVE these lyrics...one of my favs from this CD
Voodoo Medicine Man - it took me a few listens to get into this song, but it's cool and it has atmosphere and personality
What It Takes - Absolutely beautiful, this is how to write a great rock love song!

The Upside - Great Songs, great production (far better than done with mirrors),the band sounds awesome and the vocals are amazing

The Downside - I can't think of any

The Bottom Line - This many great songs on one CD is not easy to find...you should run out and buy this now..especially with a starting price of 1 penny used...holy smokes this is definitely worth that!!! This is Aerosmith in their prime...Donutman says so!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent...Almost TOO excellent, August 12, 2005
This review is from: Pump (Audio CD)
Few musicans can produce works that leave their audience speechless, and Aerosmith is one of them. Pump treats us to such classics as Love In An Elevator and Janie's Got A Gun, but this is also brings us wonders like Young Lust (with its air of youthfulness), Don't Get Mad, Get Even (with Tyler working some magic on the harmonica), and What It Takes (with its melancholic tune of bad break ups and moving on). Get this CD and you'll see what I mean. If you enjoy it, then good for you. If you don't, then you might need to seek some sort of psychiatric help. If you do get psychiatric help and still don't like this album, then I suppose that Aerosmith just isn't your thing.
