5.0 out of 5 stars most groundbreaking top 10 hit ever..
in 1989, MARRS released Pump Up The Volume, which became a massive hit around the world. It was also the first US / UK top 10 hit to be composed entirely of samples.

3.0 out of 5 stars ....don't let the magic die......
I was always so "hyped" when I heard this on the radio...a real treat. The song, however, is one of the rare ones that actually "wears thin" when you have access to it at anytime.

in 1989, MARRS released Pump Up The Volume, which became a massive hit around the world. It was also the first US / UK top 10 hit to be composed entirely of samples.
Many music writers consider that PUTV inalterably changed the face of pop music. Consider the fact that Rick Astley was one of the biggest artists in the world in 1989, and you will begin to appreciate the impact of this great single.
It is truly a dance music classic, as much a keynote in the history of dance music as Blue Monday by New Order or Autobahn by Kraftwerk.
I am always pleased to see the reactions of first time listeners to this song, most of whom find it difficult to believe that this was released in 1989, not 1999 or even more recently.

The only negative thing I can say about this song is that it sort of paved the way for people like will smith to sample old songs to death without any originality at all, something MARRS definitely have not done with their masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars An OBSCURE-Disk Approved Release, April 19, 2000
By
M. D. Weiskopf (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pump Up the Volume / Anitina (Audio CD)
M/A/R/R/S was a one-off collaboration between members of two UK experimental pop hotshots -- A.R. Kane (Rough Trade) and Colourbox (4AD). (The band's name represents the initials of its members.) "Pump Up The Volume" was, at its heart, a tape-collage of various other pioneering dance hits of the era: it liberally sampled likeminded tracks by Stock/Aitken/Waterman and Coldcut, stirring up mild controversy in the process. The track (a substantial success in the US as well) has since come to prominence as a genre-defining movie-soundtrack favorite, most recently in the dark '80s satire "American Psycho."

3.0 out of 5 stars Great early Techno/dance., August 23, 1998

This is not "Texe Marrs". It is MARRS. It is good early Techno/Dance, but not the epitome. Check out Pop Will Eat Itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a prime example of early phat sampling, July 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pump Up the Volume / Anitina (Audio CD)
This is a breakthrough album for the time. Recorded in 1987, this combined all the sampling and scratching that so many DJ's today are hyped for. This is what started it all. Marrs pioneered the field before anyone else.

Perhaps the most influential one-hit wonder ever. Regardless of your musical tastes, this CD is essential in understanding the evolution of modern music. Includes a very good b-side to boot!

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Confused By the Packaging--All 5 Tracks Are There!, May 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pump Up the Volume / Anitina (Audio CD)
Interzone Records' review below is correct, not that you'd know it from the CD's packaging, which indicates, both on the outer inserts, as well as inner, that there are only three tracks (2 mixes of "PUtV" and "Anitina"). The fourth and fifth tracks ("Pump Up the Volume [Remix 2/Bonus Beat]" [4:47] and "Pump Up the Volume [Remix 3/Instrumental]" [5:07]) ARE present. I suppose it is possible that there are different releases that don't feature all five tracks (Amazon confusingly lists several editions of this release) but rest assured that the release featuring UPC #6-52637-07072-9 contains all five tracks from the original maxi-single. Audio quality is crisp, but sounds unremastered, so it is a bit lacking in power and "oomph!"; bass is particularly anemic for a song of this nature. Still a very worthwhile purchase, if the price is right!
