Book Description

3 and up
And so begins this timeless story of a treasured childhood tradition. Jack-o-lantern faces are drawn on paper in anticipation. Baskets of apples fill the air with the crisp, sweet smell of fall at the farmers' market. There a child finds a pumpkin that's not too big and not too small. Soon it's carved (with mother's help, of course), and set outside to glow in the starry night.

Written by Anne Rockwell, one of the most beloved names in books for preschoolers, and illustrated by Megan Halsey, whose delightfully uncluttered paper sculptures speak clearly to young children, Pumpkin Day, Pumpkin Night is a friendly toast to a child's sense of accomplishment and the joy of a special day shared between parent and child.

Pumpkin Day, Pumpkin Night
is the second collaboration by Anne Rockwell and Megan Halsey, the creative team behind One Bean, an American Bookseller "Pick of the List."

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-From the way leaves are changing color, squirrels are foraging, and schoolchildren are making paper pumpkins to decorate the walls, a young boy realizes that it's "pumpkin time." With great anticipation, the day comes to pick out his perfect pumpkin, take it home to carve, and make it glow as bright as the moon above. The child's delight heightens as he describes how his mother uses other parts of the fruit by roasting the seeds and baking a spicy pie. Rockwell's text is lively and rhythmic. Paired with Halsey's abstract paper sculptures that are full of striking color combinations and intriguing shadow play, it makes the perfect book to capture and keep the attention of young readers. An exceptional autumn offering that's sure to become a seasonal favorite.

From Booklist

As the leaves turn color, signaling the approach of "pumpkin time," young Jeffrey draws sample jack-o'lantern faces on construction paper in anticipation of the day he will help carve this season's prized decoration. Finally pumpkin day arrives; Jeffrey and his mother drive to the farmers market, cull the mounds of squashes, and select their perfectly round and orange choice. At home that evening, Mom transfers Jeffrey's pumpkin picture onto the real pumpkin and carves its beaming face while the two toast pumpkin seeds and bake the small pie pumpkins Mom brought home. Readers can almost smell the nutty aroma of roasting pumpkins that envelops this warm scene of parent and child interacting in a favorite fall tradition. The three-dimensional illustrations, like Jeffrey's pumpkin faces, appear cut from crayon-colored construction paper, creating a charming childlike quality. Rockwell and Halsey (One Bean [1998]) have caused an engaging picture book to evolve from their celebration of a simple childhood joy. Ellen Mandel

My son and I love reading this book. With its beautiful cadences and lovely rhythms, it makes a nice story about choosing your holiday pumpkin--your perfect pumpkin--and it captures the flavors and textures and smells of fall in just that special way. A book filled with pumpkins that gently and beautifully captures the imagination of your young child and the deep inner glow they get when their pumpkin is glowing in the night.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Fall Book, October 19, 2008
"Punkin' Day, Punkin' Night? Mama read it?" was the request of the week when this book was at our house. We love this book! My son and I checked it out of the library because he's noticing all of the pumpkins at the market and on doorsteps, and this book just fueled his obsession. He's almost two years old and this story is perfect for explaining what we do with a pumpkin for Halloween. J loves the nighttime pages when the pumpkin is glowing, we can see the moon, the leaves are off the trees, and it's very serene. We read this book at least two times a day while it was at our house. I highly recommend Anne Rockwell for the toddler set; her books are very simple and pleasant for little learners.
