Simple, old-fashioned story,
By
This review is from: Pumpkin Moonshine (Hardcover)
"Pumpkin Moonshine" is one of the first Halloween stories I can remember finding in my grade school library. The story is very, very simple, with beautiful artwork, which is probably why it was so captivating. In the story, a little girl decides to make a "pumpkin moonshine," an old-fashioned term for what we call a Jack-o-Lantern. The girl finds a suitable pumpkin, but it rolls away down the hill, and havoc ensues! A very nice touch is the artwork on the first letter of a word on each page. Tiny drawings weave their way around the capital letter, and subtly enhance the story. One of Tasha Tudor's earliest published works, with her signature art style, this is book a real charmer. If you have pre-school or Grade 1-2 kids, both you and they will enjoy the story of the "Pumpkin Moonshine!"

Pumpkin Moonshine - 60 years later!,

If you've never carved a "Pumpkin Moonshine" you've missed a wonderful part of Halloween. As a little girl, Tasha Tudors delightful story was a favorite of mine. My children grew up carving pumpkins, not into jack-o-lanterns, but into Pumpkin Moonshines. The "grands" now enjoy grandmothers love for the season and the wonderful "Pumpkin Moonshine" with the re-release of this beautiful little book to be loved by all.

My mother read this book to me as a child. It was out of print for a while, but this new printing is excellent. The illustrations (same as orginal version) are superb and the text is quaint but clever enough to keep the attention of small kids or new readers. Highly recommended for Halloween or year round.

Through the years I have purchased many Tasha Tudor books for family and friends; all have deserved a FIVE STAR rating as far as I am concerned. Her delightful illustrations have been outstanding and reflect the story content almost "word-for-word".
She is a MUST on our book shelf!

Delightful for Halloween,

This is a primary book set in pre-1900s Connecticut. The lovely little story could prompt discussion about holiday traditions and life on the farm in the US. The illustrations provide an amusing and exciting crescendo. The teacher may want to use this book around Halloween as a seasonal story about scaring people, which is not a scary book at all. The book could prompt talk about what life in the US was like during earlier periods: When did this story take place? How can you tell? How was Halloween different then?

My 2-year-old loves Halloween. We bought her this book in October to help get her in the mood, and she loves it! The story is very sweet and set in a much simpler time. I love how it took the reader full circle, so children can see where pumpkins come from and how they get to our porch in the form of a "pumpkin moonshine" - with a silly story in the middle about the runaway pumpkin. The illustrations are beautiful. This is our first Tasha Tudor book, but definitely not our last.

Charming, delightfully old-fashioned Halloween tale,

First published in 1937, Tasha Tudor's "Pumpkin Moonshine" still has a timeless innocence and appeal. It is a delightfully simple story of a little girl on a farm who picks a pumpkin and rolls it downhill to where she can make it into a jack-o-lantern (or a "moonshine," as they apparently called them in New England, way back when...) A simple story made magical with clean storytelling and wonderful art. (ReadThatAgain)

Any Tasha Tudor book is a treasure, this book is no exception to that. Simple in scope, yet beautiful and timeless. My girls and I love this book and have it in our Fall Harvest table display.

This is a most delightful little book, delightfully illustrated by one of America's best illustrators Tasha Tudor. It makes a wonderful gift for halloween for a very young child, especially from a
grandparent. It is Tasha Tudor's first book done in 1938. In following her later- illustrated books such as "The Night Before Christmas" and "Times to Keep", you can see how her eye for detail for both adults and children improved. You will love the different expressions on the pumpkin's face and the little girl who is chasing it. It is a simple story for young children to follow easily. I recently purchased this for a friend's grandchild. I tried several book stores to no avail and was thrilled to find it on Amazon along with a list of many other of Tudor's books. Thank you Amazon! |
