5.0 out of 5 stars Fun book for the fall season!, March 20, 2011
This review is from: Oh My, Pumpkin Pie! (Step into Reading, Step 2) (Paperback)
We started reading this book when my child was 2.5 and we all still love it now that she's almost 5 and learning to read. We used to only have it out at the start of fall and put it away after Thanksgiving, but now it is out year round. It has fun illustrations that as she learns to read help her figure out what the words are, a fun rhyming text and just captures the magic of pumpkins and that time of year. She asks for it frequently, and I really never get tired of reading it with her:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Pumpkins!!!! Autumn wouldn't be awsome without them!, June 8, 2009
This review is from: Oh My, Pumpkin Pie! (Step into Reading, Step 2) (Paperback)
This book would a be terrific book for preschool and Kindergarten classes on Autumn / Fall and all the wonderful things you can do with a pumpkin during October and November, and especially for children who don't live up north and know have only known pumpkins to be purchased a church sales or a supermarkets.

The book talks about all kinds of shapes and sizes that pumpkins can be found in and how they are grown in rows on a farm. Not only can pumpkins become Jack-o-lanterns but taken to fairs to win a prize, made into pumpkin pie, muffins, bread, roasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin butter or even a scarecrow's head.

I like very much how Kenneth Spengler illustrated this book, it is warm, colorful and friendly. His jack-o-lanterns are cute and not scary! This book is also rated as a Step 2 book and is geared for preschool - 1st grade. It says: Does your child recognize familiar word on site and sounds out new word with help. Basic vocabulary, short sentences and simple stories. I'd have to say that for a preschooler they would be pretty advanced reader to read this book. I think it is more for a 1st graders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a cute book!, July 6, 2008
This review is from: Oh My, Pumpkin Pie! (Step into Reading, Step 2) (Paperback)
This is one of my 3 year old's favorite books. It's such a cute description of pumpkins - the different sizes, colors, and the different things that can be made from pumpkins - like pumpkin pie. Very good book for little kids!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but misleading title, November 7, 2011

This review is from: Oh My, Pumpkin Pie! (Step into Reading, Step 2) (Paperback)
This is a fine fall book for new readers. I think my 1st grader will enjoy reading it aloud. It is just right for gaining confidence as well as learning a few new spelling patterns. However, I'm disappointed. I purchased it in early November, thinking (based on the title) that it would be more about pumpkins as pies than as Jack-o-lanterns. My daughter loves pumpkin pie and is excited about having it for Thanksgiving. Pumpkin pie was only mentioned once in the book. The whole book was about different shapes and looks of pumpkins, and the last few pages were about Jack-o-lanterns. The very last line is "Pumpkin faces burning bright in the cool October night." Bummer. I feel so out-of-date.
