3.0 out of 5 stars Adaptor Again Ignors Del Rey Policy, March 10, 2008
This review is from: Pumpkin Scissors 2 (Paperback)
Ikoi Hiroe must not read Del Rey manga, despite being employed by them (even if as a freelance translator). Indeed, Ikoi Hiroe must not have been given the Del Rey memo regarding Del Rey's official policy concerning the use of Japanese honorifics. Allow me to quote:

"Throughout the Del Rey Manga books, you will find Japanese honorifics left in tact in the translations."

Ikoi Hiroe has for, the 2nd time, flushed all Japanese honorifics, either ignoring them outright (the dog "Mer-kun" is now "Merc") or just changing them to whatever this translator/adapter thinks is best. Now, if this were Viz or some other company with now declarations of Japanese honorific usage in their manga adaptations, I would simply express my feeling that they *should* be used. However, when a company says, "we use Japanese honorifics" and the translator/adapter thumbs their nose at the policy, I as a consumer feel I've been lied to. After all, you can't say "we use Japanese honorifics" and then not use them. I thought that maybe volume 1 would be a fluke and that volume 2 would have them in it, but alas, that's not the case.

As to the manga, the stories covered are the attempted theft of the modified captured tank, Oland's stay in the hospital, and the start of the story regarding the extortion of the underground refugees and the flame-thrower trooper.

Bottom line: Call me nuts, but I buy Del Rey manga because of their honorific policy. Since its being flushed for "Pumpkin Scissors," I'm going to flush buying the title from now on. :-(
