Book Description

January 13, 2005 Watch It Grow
Capturing photographically the lifecycle from first conception/pollination to a fully grown adult/plant, these titles look at the various processes. The text works on two different levels: the first simple paragraph reads in conjunction with the picture to give an overview, while the main text expands these points in greater detail.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Another entry in the perennial crop of pumpkin books. This title takes readers from seedling to fruit through sharp, magnified color photographs and a simple, large-print text. The writing is clear and direct, and the illustrations are, for the most part, excellent. However, the book has somewhat of a "blind men and the elephant" approach. Readers see an entire pumpkin on the title page and on the spread that reads "The pumpkin is fully grown," but it is never shown duringdiscussions of seeds, roots, leaves, etc. In addition, it is not mentioned that a pumpkin plant grows as a vine. The photographs are not captioned but integrated into the text. This approach is sometimes confusing. While male and female blossoms are mentioned and the sexual parts of each one beautifully photographed, it isn't clear which is which. On one page, a root is shown while the text discusses the moist soil softening the shell of the seed and the seed sending out tiny roots. Is the picture of a tiny root much magnified? Readers won't know. On the whole, though, this is a serviceable title and, given the yearly demand for books on the topic, it will definitely be used. Ron Fridell and Patricia Walsh's Life Cycle of a Pumpkin (Heinemann Library, 2001) presents the same material in a more complete manner.

From Booklist

Reviewed with Barrie Watts' Duck.

K-Gr. 3. Do ducks have teeth? How many seeds does a pumpkin have? Prereaders and older children will find the answers to these and other simple questions about animal and plant growth in this exceptionally fine series. The high-quality, vivid color photos will immediately attract kids, and many of the pictures appear life-size. The photos don't always give a sense of scale, but they usually provide enough context to avoid confusing even young children. The information is set down on bright white pages in extralarge, well-spaced type, making it easy to read, and the concepts are very clearly explained. Some content-specific words (fertilized, pollen, etc.) are printed in boldface and then redefined in a glossary. These word choices are well thought out, a big change from many series where boldface terms often seem arbitrarily chosen. Chapter heads, in even larger type than the main text, are made to order for the very young; each one adds a piece to a "story-within-a-story" that can be read on its own. A visual reprise of photos in the book makes up a "Life Cycle" page, giving children a chance to review what they have learned--for reinforcement or fun. A great way to introduce science in the classroom and out. Stephanie Zvirin

Up close and detailed look at the growth of a pumpkin from seed germination to its use after harvest. The text is clearly written and well researched. Beyond the obvious, concepts such as seed leaves, root hairs, and what happens to a flower that isn't pollinated are included. Excellent photographs and a labeled illustration. The photographs could be improved with captions. There is a glossary, index, and one page photo recap of the pumpkin life cycle. Karen Woodworth Roman, Children's Science Book Review
