Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Berger, a boxing writer for the New York Times for the past eight years, has anthologized his best magazine and newspaper articles to provide an interesting read for the boxing fan. Berger profiles a wide range of boxing personalities, from would-be contenders to former champions to current megastar champions like Riddick Bowe. We learn about such intriguing figures as Rock Newman, the man behind heavyweight champ Bowe; Angelo Dundee, trainer extraordinaire, and Evander Holyfield, the "Real Deal." The articles are breezy and have little in-depth analysis or reflection, but they offer the reader a primer on recent boxing history. Recommended for boxing collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read, June 12, 2006
This book by the late Mr. Berger casts an unflinching gaze into the world of boxing. He chronicles triumphs and tragedies with equal skill and insight, and each vignette is presented in a style that is easy to read yet utterly compelling. It leaves the reader with an appreciation for the demands the sport places on a person's body, psyche, and life, and enlightens the dark netherworld of those who operate behind the scenes. Highly recommended
