This book is a great reminder of the days when Punisher wasn't an annoying parody of himself. Great art by Jim Lee, the stories are hit or miss, but these "classic" punisher comics were far superior to everything since the mid 90's. Sure, Garth Ennis had an entertaining run when he hit it big with the Punisher character, but that should have lasted less than 1/2 as long as it did, and if you made the mistake of reading Punisher comics during WORLD WAR HULK like I did, its time to cleanse your palette and get a taste of the real, original Frank Castle. When looking at the bland black white newspaper reprints of al of Marvel's best 60's-80's comics that are called "Essentials", I cannot help but wonder why so much of the company's best material , the stuff that truly made them stand out above DC, isn't even given color reprints. I take what I can get with the "Classic" library,but they shouldn't keep releasing "volume 1" with no follow-up. Let me remind you oldschool Marvel fans that Man-thing, Iron Fist, Master of Kung-Fu, Luke Cage Hero for Hire, Jungle Action, Supervillain Team-up, Steve Gerber's Foolkiller, and a plethora of other important and semi-forgotten characters have never had their material reprinted in color. Yet almost every sub-par issue of modern Marvel comics are reprinted on glossy color paper within a few months of their single issue release. WTF Marvel?!?!?! I'd buy a lot more trade paperbacks and omnibuses if they recollected more silver age material. I hope Joe Quesada and other bigwigs at Marvel will realize what's up one of these days.
