Book Description

1992
PUNK 77 covers the beginnings of the San Francisco Punk Rock scene through the Sex Pistols concert at Winterland in January, 1978, in interviews and photographs by James Stark. James was among the many artists involved in the early punk scene. His photos were published in New York Rocker, Search & Destroy and Slash, among others. His posters for Crime are classics and highly prized collectors items. Contains over 100 photos, including many behind-the-scenes looks at the bands who made things happen: Nuns, Avengers, Crime, Screamers, Negative Trend, Dils, Germs, UXA, etc. Interviews with the bands and people on the scene give intimate, often darkly humorous glimpses of events in a Please Kill Me (Legs McNeil) style.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I would recommend this book not only for old-timers looking for nostalgia, but especially to young Punks who have no idea how this all got off the ground, who take today's Punk for granted, to see how precarious it was at birth, what a fluke it was, and to perhaps be able to get a fresh perspective on todays scene needs... -- TY, MAXIMUMROCKNROLL

The photos themselves, a generous 115 of them, are richly satisfying. They're the kind of photos one wants to see... -- Kit Drumm, PUNCTURE --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

About James Stark and the book "The Band Crime, Punk77 Revisited"
Pioneering urban artist/photographer James Stark aquired a love for the gritty street approach to photography while living in New York City in the late 1960s
When Punk happen James was ready, his gritty approach to photography put him at the front of the San Francisco punk scene.
When the band Crime was looking for someone to capture their in-your-face music and stage appearance Stark was the person with the goods. Music magazines were running photos of the band before they ever preformed because of Stark's ability to present something new in his unique way of taking photographs. People were aware that the music scene was changing but few knew what the future was to bring
When Stark hooked up with the band Crime in late 1976 and they began their assault on the rock n' roll status quo. With Stark's raw street photography and Crimes in-your-face music San Francisco became the West Coast driving force in Punk.
His images are recorded in his book Punk77 and can also be found in several books about punk. His Crime posters have been published "Street Art", "Art of Rock" and "F**ked up and Photocopied" along with an appearance in the documterary film "American Artifacts". His posters have become classics and highly prized collectors items.
"The Crime Book, Punk77 Revisited" has been published by Last Gasp and is available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome and detailed interviews and photos, December 9, 1999

This review is from: Punk '77: An inside look at the San Francisco rock 'n' roll scene, 1977 (Paperback)
I actually got this book at the garage sale that Vale (the publisher) had a few weeks back and it was a fun experience in itself. The book is loaded with great pictures and interviews with a lot of the local scenesters in SF before the decline of the initial scene by "jock-punks" from the suburbs. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in underground American history. I was actually mostly impressed with the socio-economic situation which existed at the time, the book delves into that aspect via the interviews quite a bit!
