To check growing rebellion in Latin America after the Cuban Revolution, at Punta del Este in 1961 John F. Kennedy initiated the Alliance for Progress—a program for free trade and development. Che Guevara, representing the Cuban government, condemned the plan as a new strategy of domination. The book echoes today’s debate provoked by President Chávez’s proposal for an alternative Latin American trade bloc.

Ernesto Che Guevara was born in Argentina in 1928. After fighting alongside Fidel Castro in the three-year guerilla war in Cuba, he became Minister for Industry following the victory of the Cuban revolution. In 1966 he established a guerilla base in Bolivia. He was captured and killed in 1967.
