The best musicianship I've seen in a while, April 4, 2008
*Note: review is based on the limited edition of Puppenspiel, which has two extra tracks.*
The reasoning is simple; the more I listen to Unheilig, the more I find myself drawn into the music, the more complexity I hear, and the more I enjoy it. I find that I can sit for a full 75 minutes, in a quiet room, with a good set of headphones, just listening, and not be bored. I don't know of any other musicians that can write music this effectively.
I've tried to understand how Unheilig does it, and here's what I've come up with. First, Unheilig can write in many styles equally well; hard rock, catchy techno rhythms and vamping, deep orchestra and piano, and vocal-centered sounds all come across equally well, and are constantly mixed together in different ways. Second, there are powerful ideas driving the songs--the desperate needs deep inside the mind of a murderer, what it takes to get through the death of a good friend--all are expressed in moving lyrics, and the music accentuates the emotions perfectly. Third, Unheilig actually understands chord progressions; I've never formally studied music theory myself, but I know there are chord changes on this disc that give me chills.
In short, I would recommend Unheilig, and Puppenspiel, to anyone who wants to take their music seriously, and enjoys finding new things in it.
(Now...to compare with other Unheilig works...I'd say I place it a close second behind Zelluloid. The mixing and bass/treble balance is better on Puppenspiel, but I'd say Zelluloid made better use of sound effects and vamping to make the songs unique and identifiable. I'm splitting hairs, but there it is.)

Nice beat, June 20, 2008
Unheilig is like an easy listening version of Rammstein. Puppenspiel is not as moody as for example "Das 2 Gebot" and also more upbeat. This album is well worth purchasing, excellent value.

Unheilig Rocks!, March 6, 2009
A friend of mine brought this CD over and told me to listen to it, and I can't stop thanking him. "Puppenspiel" is some of the best music I've heard in recent memory. This is an album that gets better everytime you listen to it and will keep you going for awhile. It's also a treat to explore what other people outside are doing!
"Puppenspiel" is exactly as the reviews tell you: a PERFECT (and I mean that) blend of rock and electronic along with chorus, orchestra, and piano-IT WORKS! Hard-rockers, such as the title track and "Spiegelbild" and also have techno-beats and effects added into the mix. Club tracks include "Dein Clown" and "Kleine Puppe" (this song is a winner!) will blow you away with their mix of techno-music+beats and gothic rock, not to mention the catchy choruses. Ballads include "Sei Mein Licht" "Feuerengel" and "Deiner Seite" to name a few. The ballads are beautiful with the mix of rock and electronic, and the ones I listed I find the best ones. Definately "Power" ballads!
I don't know of many artists who can take all these styles and mix them together and make it sound like a masterpiece. For instance, "Vorhang Auf" is a blend of all the styles and opens with an orchestral piece (to be more specific, that music the orchestra plays before they begin the performance). "Memoria" is the only instrumental track on the disk, a blend of haunting chorus and elements borrowed from "Vorhang Auf." All songs are sung in German, and the lyrics that come with the album are in German as well.
The man behind the band, Der Graf (Unheilig is composed of three band members) is genius. He makes everything work: the From the music to the lyrics, it's perfectly clear how this band is big in Europe and is catching on here in the states. The thrill and allure he brings is one of a kind! After listening to this album, I'm vamped up to go and check out the band's earlier works.
If you're looking for some good music, especially rock and techno (and don't mind German lyrics), I highly recommend this. YOU WILL LIKE THIS!
