*Starred Review* PreS-Gr. 2. Puppies indeed! Energetic, perfectly scanning rhyme and busy, happy artwork go hand-in-paw to bring the tail-wagging world of puppydom to life. The oversize format, with its clean, white pages, provides the perfect backdrop for the cavorting charmers. With the accent on shape and color (some of the dogs are blue or purple), the pictures show puppies nursing, being taken to new homes, gallivanting in the park, going to obedience school, and winning prizes. Even the most mundane puppy habits are captured: "Leaving puddles on the floor / sneaking out the kitchen door." That example of the rhyme shows the simplicity Meyers employs in a text so well structured that almost any adult (or new reader) can prance through with natural, bouncy enthusiasm. A brief artist's note explains that the paintings began with a pencil sketch and then were layered with acrylic color. This technique and the softly rounded shapes give the doggies a stuffed-animal look; kids will want to pick them up and give them a hug. Ilene Cooper

About the Author

Susan Meyers raises champion show dogs and is the author of the best-selling Everywhere Babies, which is about to be released in a board book edition (9/04). David Walker is a noted illustrator of gift cards and other stationery and gift items. This is his second picture book. Booklist called his first "charming" and "sweetly expressive." He lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

This delightful puppy book is a joy to read! The language dances on your tongue, just like the lively puppies who romp through the pages. A perfect gift for anyone, child or adult, who has or is getting a puppy of their own. The book tells what it's like to have a puppy around the house...yet its charm is in the enthusiastic and caring portrayal of the pleasures of being a puppy and having puppies in your life. This is a book to read again and again....it will end up dogeared and loved for sure.

A delight for children -- and all others who love dogs. In just-right rhymes, Susan Meyers has captured a puppy's life -- as well as that of the puppy's owner. It can't be read without it causing smiles -- and from time to time, giggles. A joyous read!
