5.0 out of 5 stars A touching memoir about a life saved by a puppy
I was very excited to finally receive my copy of this book. I have been hearing about it for a month on the web. I found this story compelling a very readable. The authors descriptions of his symptoms and subsequent diagnosis of manic depression are vivid and thought provoking. He really hits a low point before deciding that a dog might be his last chance. The story that...

3.0 out of 5 stars Healing Power of Dogs
This is a really good book about the healing power of dogs as told through one guy's diary. It is all about the author and what makes him tick and how the dog helped him. On this topic, I really loved also another book, Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs because it gave the science behind how dogs help humans. You could really understand your own attachment to your...

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching memoir about a life saved by a puppy, March 16, 2008
The story that follows is hilarious and touching. As Bruce's trial and error education in puppy rearing commences we laugh and cry with him as Ozzy, his adorable black lab puppy, drags Bruce back into life. I think anyone who lives with a pet can tell you that they can lift your sprits with a warm nuzzle, but this dog truly saved this mans life. A great read for pet lovers, but also a thoughtful memoir about coping with mental illness and a wonderful tale about falling in love.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm loving this book!!, March 16, 2008
This book is inspriational and I can't put it down. I'm on chapter 17.
Bruce's writing is so honest....I can really relate to his isolation and pain.
I greatly appreciate Bruce's ability to keep fighting through everything he's going through.
I recommend this book to everyone. I'm gonna try and finish it tonight!

This is a really good book about the healing power of dogs as told through one guy's diary. It is all about the author and what makes him tick and how the dog helped him. On this topic, I really loved also another book, Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs because it gave the science behind how dogs help humans. You could really understand your own attachment to your dog with that book, while with this book you only understood the author's attachment to his own dog. I recommend both books.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Touched Me, September 8, 2008

Being a dog owner and a person who lives with bipolar disorder, this book caught my attention. I waited a few weeks to read it, but once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. I read the entire book in a 24 hour period. The author's depiction of living and struggling with bipolar disorder is so real. I am very glad that he was so honest, as it will help people understand what we are dealing with.
I have been through some struggles with bipolar disorder and my dogs have been there with me through it all. I don't know how I could be here today if it were not for my babies.
I have a better grasp on my bipolar disorder because of this book. It really touched me!

5.0 out of 5 stars DOG'S ARE A LIFE SAVER, July 28, 2008
Hi,
I just want to share a little story. My baby girl Abby was a shepard/ rot mix and she was 10 when she left this world. I am bipolar / manic depressed and the story in this book is so true. Abby loved me unconditionally and I her When I was real down she was there. When I was feeling better she was there. True friendship and love. This book reminded me so much of what happened to me and how she helped me through the bad times. Now that she is gone I can,t help but think what will happen now but the words in this book ring true A dog is more than a best friend it IS A LIFE SAVER and I hope it will inspire more people to seek help. Depression is an illness that some of us have to deal with and we need all the help we can get. I myself don,t know what the future will bring but if I could have her back for just one day I think I could make it but now we all have our own demons to fight and PUPPY'S ARE BETTER THAN ANY DRUG

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, April 1, 2008

I read this book the very same weekend I received it in the mail. I found it to be a very moving story; starting with the ups and downs of depression and finishing with the love and laughter that came along with Ozzy. I laughed out loud as Bruce learned to care for Ozzy in a New York apartment. For those of us who have been fortunate enough to have wonderful dogs in our lives, we all know that they train us!! What a challenge doing all of this in NYC! I admire the author for sharing such a personal experience and giving us a glimpse of life with manic depression while still maintaining that great sense of humor. The book title is just priceless!

I started and finished the book in one evening. At times I laughed out loud because I could relate to the whole puppy thing. Yet another reminder that our furry friends love us no matter what. Awesome book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, December 3, 2008
Puppy Chow is Better than Prozac is funny, will make you sad, and if you have a dog, will make you appreciate the animal even more than you already do. I e-mailed the author as soon as I finished reading it, and received a reply within the hour. I believe this was his first book, and it is wonderful... I'm buying a few copies to give as Christmas gifts. Woof!
