I've used different sets of books in helping my now 5-year-old daughter learn to read. This series "Puppy Mudge" was one of the early books that we used back when she was four and which we still use for practice. The books in this Ready-To-Read series are categorized into 4 levels:
Pre-Level 1 - Recognizing Words
Level 1 - Starting to Read
Level 2 - Reading Independently
Level 3 - Reading Proficiently

At 5, my daughter is currently at Level 1. In these pre-level 1 books, children who are starting to show an interest in reading will find the story of Puppy Mudge (and a rather large puppy he is too!) interesting and engaging. Mudge gets into all sorts of scrapes and the stories rely on certain key words being repeated throughout the story. These books are suited for children ages 4-6.

I'm a big Cynthia Rylant fan, so I have no beef with her, in particular. I also thought the story was cute, and obviously a lead in to the series she's written about Mudge & Henry, as well as other spin-offs to that world. All darling!

However, I do have a beef with calling this a "pre-reader" book, presumably for kids learning to sound out words, recognize sight words, etc. We first encountered this series (Ready to Read, Pre- Level 1) with the "Otto" books and they were a home-run, in my opinion. This one ... not so much. Far more words that don't follow the standard patterns of phonics than do make up the story. Hard, indeed, for my brand-new reader to make a go of.

Puppy Mudge is a really big dog. He lives with Henry. Puppy Mudge likes crackers and chew toys and he likes to drool. He drools a lot!

Puppy Mudge likes cats. He and Fluffy have a great time together. Fluffy climbs, but Mudge does not. They each like to hide and have such fun that they get really tired.

Now Fluffy is purring and Mudge is snoring. What are they doing? SLEEPING! Can a cat and a dog be friends? I think so.

This is a Pre-Level 1 (meaning below kindergarten). This is the first book my daughter learned to read completely by herself. Very simple sentences and words that she can sound out. As a 5 year-old, she quickly knew this one by heart. When I knew she wasn't even "reading" the words anymore, we went to the Level 1 books where she actually has to look at the letters and words to comprehend them. Very cute illustrations and my daughter laughed at some of the pages heartily.
