Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Greye and Smith are the cofounders of Kritter Sitters, a Beverly Hills-based dog-training business. But new puppy owners anticipating gossipy tidbits about the authors' exclusive and glamorous 90210 clientele will be disappointed. Anecdotes are sparse and rendered anonymously. Still, the authors offer solid information on selecting and raising a puppy, with the requisite warnings about pet store dogs and puppy mills. Chapters are organized by puppy developmental stages, with a concluding chapter of dog resources. There is some breed-specific material, too. The attitude recommended toward all dogs is indulgent, loving, and consistent. However, readers looking for in-depth behavioral insights will do better with Judith Halliburton's Raising Rover (LJ 6/15/96), and libraries seeking a comprehensive dog-care book should examine Dogs: The Ultimate Care Guide, edited by Matthew Hoffman (Rodale, 1998). How many times Ive picked up a book about dogs to read, and by the third chapter got bored.......not with this book! I find it charming, funny, USEFUL, and so entertaining! Im not looking for gossip about Movie Stars, I leave that to The GOSSIP Magazines. My interest is in Puppies, and they have more than satisfied that issue. Good luck to you guys, keep up the good work!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bow-WOW!, May 1, 2001

This review is from: Puppy Parenting: Everything You Need to Know About Your Puppy's First Year (Hardcover)
Jan Greye and Jesse Smith, who are professional dog sitters, have written a delightful book that manages to be full of useful information--things such as which breeds will run up your vet bill and how to get a puppy to take a pill--and is at the same time a joy to read. Lots of very funny anecdotal stuff about their experiences with their doggie clients and the dogs' owners. A nice departure from all those dry, encyclopedic how-to-raise-your-puppy-from-A-to-Z volumes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good for entertainment only, January 29, 2010

I was quite disappointed with this book. Although it has a little good advice, it also contains some glaring misconceptions. For instance, a vegetarian diet was advocated at one point. Dogs are carnivores. They do not need a vegetarian diet. Also, they said not to feed your dog natural bones, unless they were boiled knuckle bones. Raw bones are perfectly acceptable, provided they aren't small enough for your dog to gulp without chewing. Cooked bones of any type become brittle and may splinter, causing terrible damage. For the good of your dog, don't listen to this book.
