1.0 out of 5 stars trainers poin of view
I have read over 20 books that I like and this is (in one trainers opinion) an Awful book. I would never recommend it to anyone! I'm sure many of the methods work but why use them when modern training methods have advanced in so many effective positive ways. First of all the author says that every puppy should have a choke chain at 4 months old. I have trained hundreds...

We read this book before getting our first dog and it made a HUGE difference for our family in understanding what to expect with a new puppy. Now, eighteen months later, we have a well-behaved dog who has been a pleasure to have in our home. All of this without the usual trauma that most people talk about when detailing their attempts to change an incontient puppy into a well-behaved young adult dog. The techniques listed in the book worked well for us. I strongly recommend this book to any first time dog owner. We plan to give it as "new puppy welcoming gift" to new dog owners...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Puppy Book Ever!, March 7, 2000
Easy to read, sensible, accurate, and gentle methods fully explained. Don't get a puppy until you read this book. Details on effective housebreaking, expectations you should have for your "baby", what NOT to do with the pup, and how to be the benevolent leader of your dog. This is by far the best out of ten or so books I have read on puppy/dog training.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book for understanding puppy psychology, July 25, 2004
By
This is a good foundation book for the novice puppy owner. I definately recommend reading this book BEFORE you bring your new puppy home. It's not a book to read if you have an older puppy with dominance or other problems. The idea behind this book is to prevent unwanted beahavior with positive reinforcement. If you have behavior problems you should address spend your money on a lesson with an experienced trainer and not books.

There is one area where I don't agree with the author - using a choke collar. Choke collars are not humane and there are much more effective ways of training your puppy. I am also not crazy about the section on good dogs and bad dogs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worked for us, June 12, 2000
My wife and I bought this book two years ago before we got our first dog- a male golden retriever. We thought the methods were a little strange, too, but we tried them out and they work great!

He housebroke easily, though we could not bring ourselves to crate him every night. Our dog is now two years old. He is well trained, obeys simple commands, walks easily on a leash, has NEVER chewed on a single thing in our house (an amazing feat for a lagely indoor golden) and he stops whatever he is doing when I give a short guttoral growl.

There was lots of helpful information for us novice dog owners. I don't know if these methods would work as well for a german shepherd or a chow, but I couldn't be happier with how they worked for us. Whatever methods you use, spending the time and energy it takes to direct your dog to proper behavior at an early age will pay big dividends down the road.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book by accident in 1996. I only picked it because I was getting a puppy and it had the most recent publication date.

This book is well written - funny and informative. I bought a lot of puppy books and this was the best one. I am getting ready to purchase it again - my neighbors just got their first puppy.

5.0 out of 5 stars All pups should come with this instruction manual!, July 30, 1999

We have always had reasonably well behaved dogs throughout the years, but only after fairly stressful puppy months! Puppy Preschool presents a logical, simplistic approach to "connecting" with your dog. It's the closest thing to a "Dog/Human, Human/Dog" dictionary that you'll find. When we uttered our first "Nhaaa!!!", our pup stopped dead in her tracks, whipped her head around, as if to say, "Did my mother tell you to say that?" LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous training resource!, February 6, 2006

Mlle Fantine (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
I bought this book prior to purchasing my first puppy Zora. Although my family has had dogs all of my life, she is my first dog, and as she will be a part of my life for many years, I really wanted to learn everything that could help makes those years fun and enjoyable for both of us. I must say this book is indispensible! Author John Ross clearly has a great passion for dogs. While he is a strong advocate of positive training, he also believs that negative behavior should be humanely repremanded. His training techniques are very logical and use a lot of plain common sense. He addresses several dog training myths that even the most experience dog owners may fall prey to. What makes this book stand out is Ross's obvious love for his dogs, and all dogs in general. He promotes responsible dog ownership and encourages training one of the ways to be a responsible pet owner. 60% of all dogs in shelters are there because of behavior problems. Ross's theory is that most of these dogs wouldn't have to be there had their owners takes the time to properly train them. What makes this book a true classic is Ross's method of presenting his information. he is a truly gifted writer who is a joy to read. His writing style is warm, readable, and full of amusing anecdotes. This book is a true gem and I would argue also a must for all dog owners.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT Puppy Book!, February 13, 2004
A Kid's Review
I love this book. I used it when I got my four-month-old shepherd-mix, and the "nhaa" thing really does work! I found this book talked more about imitating the puppy's mother's behavior than some other books I've read. I also loved this author's informal style.

I know some people disagree with the "10 Problem Breeds," but the author isn't saying that you should never get any of those breeds. He's just warning potential puppy owners so they don't bring an extremely energetic Aussie or Dalmation into an apartment, or get an Old English Sheepdog when they have very little time to spend with the dog.

This book is very detailed (but not ridiculously detailed) and I recommend it to anyone.

This is a great book with all kinds of tips for all dog owners. Your dog reacts to you, so this book can help you find the answers you've been looking for. It's written in a page by page format so it isn't just a bunch of lists on what you should do to have a happy and well-trained dog. I am very interested in dogs and this was a real page turner for me and I would definately reccomend this book to anyone wanting to learn about their best friend!
