I'd give this 3 1/2 stars if I could.
When you first attach the PUR filter, it works beautifully. Water comes out fast, and comes out clean. When you first attach the PUR filter, it works beautifully. Water comes out fast, and comes out clean. But fairly soon, and well before the filter is supposedly used up, the filter cuts down on the flow as it gets more and more clogged. After a while it can take 30 seconds to fill up a glass of water. Ours also has a leakage problem that is exacerbated the more clogged the filter is (the leak comes from the plastic covering that tells you how used up the filter is)...Don't know if ours is defective or if this is typical.

We have since bought a PUR pitcher filtration system, and that seems to be more convenient to use because you don't have to sit there like a ... waiting for your glass to fill up.

PUR is superior to BRITA filters, by the way, because they also filter giardia and cryptosporidium, two bacteria that can cause intestinal illnesses. This is especially important if you live in areas with iffy water systems (i.e. St. Petersburg, Russia, which is full of giardia/Mexico) or if you have a weak immune system.

The PUR filters work out to about 25 cents per gallon of filtered water. It costs more to filter dirtier water and less to filter cleaner water.

When you finally throw out the used filter, try cracking it open and having a look at all the nasty gunk that you didn't put into your body. It's definitely worth the price, don't you think?

My only complaint: the faucet mount itself is a bit bulky,

Overall, it's a great filter - and easier than remembering to refill one of those pitchers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tired of Carrying in Boxes of Bottled Water?, December 27, 2002
This review is from: PUR Ultimate Faucet Mount (Kitchen)
We have been known to make our every-two-week pilgrimage to Costco to get our bottled water. Honestly, it is a lot of work to carry water around. And like PUR notes in their ad: "There's more than one way to get 100 Gallons of Drinking Water into your home."

So, something had to be done. This was a serious situation. I need water for tea, when working out and basically for cooking. I refuse to drink water that has not been filtered, just out of principle.

The other problem with bottled water is the bottles you have to recycle. I will probably still buy some bottled water, but the recycling load will be much less.

What amazed me was the ease of installation. Before, I had tried to install an under the cabinet "fancy smancy" water filtration unit which was much higher in price. What then occurred was a leak in the system and unfortunately I did not realize that on certain kitchen faucets, you can't do the installation yourself when installing a water purifier. I then had to call a plumber and had to install an entirely new kitchen faucet.

Save yourself this hassle and expense.

To Install this product:

1. You remove the faucet aerator.
2. Check for an adaptor (they include a few for internal threaded faucets)
3. Attach the filter to your faucet.
4. Install the filter cartridge.

Yes, it is that easy. Sure beats water torture as you are under the sink trying to peer into the pitch darkness of under cabinet plumbing life and water is dripping on you in a most annoying fashion. I have a completely new respect for plumbers now.

The PUR "Activated Carbon Microfilter" filter up to 100 gallons of water which means you replace the filter every 2-3 months.

There is an "automatic safety monitor": that has a red line which appears in a little window at the front of the filter when the end of the filter life occurs. At such time, you just replace the filter. Keep one on hand for such a day.

What I found as a bonus was the "Swivel sprayer" that attaches to the entire system. The water that makes its way through the filter also comes out in a spray fashion. The "ByPass" feature means that you can still use your regular water for washing dishes and then switch back to filtered water by rotating the water filter at the faucet. While I thought this filter would get in the way, it really doesn't.

This product claims to reduce lead, mercury, asbestos, MTBE, and TTHMs. This product should not be used with microbiologically unsafe water.

Five Stars for ease of installation and peace of mind! I can even order the filters here with book orders.

Such convenience.

3.0 out of 5 stars For the people who have flow problems, March 14, 2006
This review is from: PUR Ultimate Faucet Mount (Kitchen)
I dont want to be mean about this but read the manual. It will tell you to run the new filter for 5 minutes to set the the filter resin. If you do this the filter will provide good flow for the full length of the filter (I get 3 months). If you dont it will slow to a trickle in days.

I have owned these for years. I say these becasue I have had two break and the third is now broken and needs replaced. One of them started leaking out the sight window, another cracked down the side and the most recent failure is that the valve for switching between filtered or not filtered is leaking.

The work great and each time I have had a problem customer service sent me out a new one immediately, I got it in days.

2.0 out of 5 stars NYC-er? Too slow, too expensive!, October 4, 2004
By
Jeff Dubin (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: PUR Ultimate Faucet Mount (Kitchen)
We use about a gallon of water a day, and I'm tired of lugging bottled water from the store. We settled on the Pur filter based on its capabilities (they claim to filter out more than the competition).

We get a decent flow for two or so days after replacing the filter (about two gallons worth), but it quickly degrades after that. After about a week, it takes about a minute to fill up a glass. After another week, it's more like three minutes (which seems like an eternity when you're thirsty at 3am!). After that, it's pointless -- it drips, drips, drips into the glass.

It's become even worse recently, even after installing a brand-new unit (the whole thing - not just the filter). Now, we get about a week out of a filter. I give it two stars because though I'm frustrated by it's slow flow, the water we do get out of it is good.

Maybe this is a NYC thing? Perhaps other parts of the country have cleaner water? I don't know. All I do know is that if you live around here, think about another alternative.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Customer Service, December 10, 2002
By
This review is from: PUR Ultimate Faucet Mount (Kitchen)
I called their 800 line and had the most horrific customer service experience in my life. I have just purchased a faucet-mount filter (Ultimate FM-4010L) from Target and it clogged up within 2 weeks even though the water flow indicator was showing that it was only 1/4 used (about 25 gallons). I have a similar PUR carafe filter that does not have the same problem.

Simply put, I was told by their "service" representative that it was all caused by too much sediment in my water. Why, I ask, this is not an issue with the carafe filter? I never got a satisfactory answer. There was nothing they could do about it. I asked what recourse I had, besides returning it to the store. I was adviced to "better return it, otherwise you will spend a lot of money in replacement filters". What kind of service is that? Who was this person working for?

This clogging problem is not new. It has been reported by other reviewers as well as by Consumer Reports in their Jan'03 issue. To me, all these flaws show serious problems in their quality control. This cast serious doubts in my mind about the safety of their filters. Would you trust the integrity of your drinking water to this company? I won't.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pur does not perform or last, January 10, 2005
By
This review is from: PUR Ultimate Faucet Mount (Kitchen)
I have been using Pur Ultimate products for many years, and can attest that the maximum use that anyone will reasonably obtain from a filter is 25-30 gallons. Even this is pushing the envelope, since when the filter reaches about 20 gallons, the flow rate is reduced to droplets, and it will take 20+ minutes to fill a one gallon container. This, of course, increases the cost per gallon to the area of $.50 which is really no great savings over spring water, and in this writer's opinion, the filtered product does not taste as good, but it does save the lifting (20 gallons is 160 lbs), and the storage space required for the spring water, and it effectively removes the chlorine taste from New York City water.

The housing units themselves are somewhat shoddy, and this should be another consideration. At one point or another, the plastic housing will develop a hairline crack, and then, of course, the unfiltered tap water will come out in ever increasing quantities first as a drip, and then as a flow. I have had three units in which this occurred, and the latest one will be the last one that I purchase. I have about 20 filters remaining, and one brand new unit (a "gift" from Proctor and Gamble after a previous unit failed), but now, I have no more time to hang on the phone and go begging to P & G for a replacement; I am simply giving up on Pur.

3.0 out of 5 stars Built-in problem, September 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: PUR Ultimate Faucet Mount (Kitchen)
In a nutshell: filtration excellent, mechanical quality poor. The leak at the faucet that several reviewers have mentioned is due to a weak part that cracks. It is a sleeve inside the ribbed ring that is used to tighten the filter to the faucet. The sleeve is small, fragile, and is subject to lots of force every time you move the filtration canister. If yours leaks it is not a manufacturing defect-the part is designed this way and if you replace it with a new one, you're wasting your time. Sooner or later, same problem. Solution: consider the cost of all those filters and look into a reverse-osmosis unit. Cheaper in the long run.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced Garbage!, August 29, 2003
This review is from: PUR Ultimate Faucet Mount (Kitchen)
I find it more than a bit ridiculous that Pur charges 27 dollars for their product and 20 - 25 dollars for their replacement filters. I have owned 3 Pur sink mounted water filters and every one of them has ended up in the garbage within the first year of use. Why? Because they begin to leak at the faucet connection and this leak grows progressively worse over time. Tightening the unit does not help and in fact may make the leak worse. Removing and reinstalling the unit does not help. I have become so frustrated by Pur water products that I will never again purchase anything made by them. I just installed a Brita filter on my sink a couple of days ago and no problems yet and even if any do occur the Brita is more reasonably priced and in fact cheaper for the sink mounted unit. Do yourself a favor and avoid this over-priced piece of junk at all costs.
