Generous 18-track collection of '80s radio classics,
By hyperbolium (Earth, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pure 80's #1s (Audio CD)
The '80s may just represent the last great gasp before music Balkanized into completely distinct states, each with their own cable feeds, satellite radio stations and internet streams. The variety found here - all #1s from the Billboard's Hot 100 chart - is something that's hard to imagine piping through any single music outlet today. Although this collection sticks to contemporary hit radio material, there's still a lot of ground between the Aussie rock of Men at Work's "Down Under," the alternative pop of Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)" and Tina Turner's sophisticated and soulful comeback, "What's Love Got to Do With It."
Every one of these songs rings with the feel of the '80s, often bringing to mind the videos and films that provided the mass-market introductions. The Police's "Every Breath You Take" is forever wedded to its iconic Godley & Creme black-and-white video, while "Eye of the Tiger," "Maniac" 'Don't You Forget About Me," and "Arthur's Theme" recall their hit films (Rocky III, Flashdance, Breakfast Club and Arthur, respectively). Many of these tunes are stick-in-your-head pop, including Fine Young Cannibals' falsetto-voiced "She Drives Me Crazy" and Lionel Richie's Caribbean styled "All Night Long." This is a fun collection that will be a nostalgic trip for anyone who tuned in MTV and pop radio in the '80s! [©2006 hyperbolium dot com]

This came out just in time for the summer! Excellent!,

This CD came out just in time for the hot days of summer! This album does a good job combining the biggest hits of the '80s--even Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Survivor, Fine Young Cannibals, Christopher Cross, Men at Work, Tears For Fears, The Police (Sting's band), and others. I have heard most of these songs on past summers, but no one has combined these 18 '80s hits in one collection like this. Even Michael Sembello's fast paced Maniac had helped his career as he later produced hits for New Edition, which I loved. He's still out there today, but doing smooth jazz songs. I still like Mike and The Mechanics moving and emotional The Living Years. The album has a summer 1984 feel to it, as I remembered hearing Tina Turner and Lionel's hits during that season. So if you're headed to the beach or driving on that long 1000 mile road trip cross country on the interstate this summer, play this CD for its 75 minutes!

80's Tops,
By Michael Kerner "Michael Kerner" (Brooklyn, New York U.S.A.) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Pure 80's #1s (Audio CD)
The music of the 80's seems to be more in demand than ever before. That has been constantly shown with various compilations, from Billboard #1's: The 80's, to a compilation of classic love songs from Time-Life's Body & Soul Collection. Still, there are just so many great tracks from the 80's that still remain classic. Sadly, no 80's compilation remains absolutely perfectional. There is always something that is missing. With the people who've made the classic Pure 80's compilations, they've turned all those classic tracks from artists like Hall & Oates and Foreigner into commonplaced favorites, and it is time for another record.
Pure 80's #1's is a single disc reflection of the best hits from the 1980's, that skyrocketed all the way to the top of the charts. The compilation plays out by choosing some great tracks from Lionel Richie's party anthem All Night Long, and Tina Turner's comeback song What's Love Got To Do With It, to guilty pleasures that're making their debut on the pure 80's album series like The Police classic Every Breath You Take, Christopher Cross's Authur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) and Mike & The Mechanics haunting track The Living years. While the collection tries to carry well, there are still so many acts that could've been highlighted here from Madonna and Michael Jackson, to Whitney Houston and Bon Jovi. Some of the big 80's success stories still felt like they were tossed aside. All in all Pure 80's #1's is a fair record, but not completely over the top. Still, if you love those great songs from the 80's, and you've bought other Pure 80's records, than this would be a great add-on to your collection. This album is really, really good. I don't think that there is a bad song in the bunch. Takes me back- as a child of the 80's/90's these were the songs that I grew up on. My dad is a senior citizen and he likes the songs as well.
