5.0 out of 5 stars If you buy one 80's compilation, make this it!
If you're looking for a good variety of memorable 80's music and don't want to spend a lot of money, then pick up this 20-track jewel of a compilation CD. First of all, it has a good blend of the essential favorites--"Video Killed the Radio Star" (recently covered for the Wedding Singer), also "Come On Eileen" (as revived in Chris Farley's Tommy Boy...

2.0 out of 5 stars Better songs were left off.
This is a decent cd the sound is good, but the selection is not what it could or should be. While it has many of the good songs of the eighties. I would have preferred they leave off "Video Killed The Radio Star", "Everybody Have Fun Tonight", and "Tempted" with "Eye Of The Tiger", "True", and "Don't Dream It's Over". They could have also added "Don't Stop Believing" and...

If you're looking for a good variety of memorable 80's music and don't want to spend a lot of money, then pick up this 20-track jewel of a compilation CD. First of all, it has a good blend of the essential favorites--"Video Killed the Radio Star" (recently covered for the Wedding Singer), also "Come On Eileen" (as revived in Chris Farley's Tommy Boy as well as covered by the ska band Save Ferris), that great Tears for Fears song (which Dennis Miller now uses as his theme song), Tainted Love (the infectious song from the Pepsi commercial..."I've got to get away..."), and Madness' "Our House". Also included are guilty pleasures like the Wang Chung cut, Stray Cats' "Rock This Town", and Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon". The CD is marvelous and also the best 80's comp I have found thus far. A close second is the Millenium 80's New Wave Party from Rhino Records. Get them both if you crave the 80's!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best overall 80's compilations available, March 15, 2002

This review is from: Pure 80's (Audio CD)
When it comes to 80's compilations, the majority of them have mostly filler 'hits' that most people either don't care about or don't even know, along with a few great hits that people actually like and want.

Pure 80's is a major exception. It provides a great overall track list that almost any 80's enthusiast will know by heart and want to own, but it's an even greater choice for mediocre fans and newbies who are looking for a single-CD collection to give them an overview of what 80's music was like.

This album, Pure 80's, almost has it all when it comes to great 80's music. It has essential hits that should be owned by any fan of the 80's ("Everybody Have Fun Tonight", "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", "Tainted Love", etc.), other great unforgettable masterpieces ("Centerfold", "Addicted To Love", "Our House", "Higher Love", etc.), and even some one-hit wonders that caused quite a stir back in the day ("Relax" and "Come on Eileen").

The only genres (of the ones I can think of right now) that are nowhere to be seen in Pure 80's is hair metal, heavy metal, instrumentals, and rap.

As an added bonus for REAL 80's fans, the booklet includes what year the song was made, and what position each song climbed to on the pop charts.

To sum it all up, Pure 80's doesn't have ALL the great 80's songs (that's an impossibilty for a single CD), but it provides a great, well-rounded lineup that is well worth owning to say the least. If you love great 80's music, or if you're looking for an album to give you a sampling of what the decade's tunes were like, Pure 80's is a must have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection for the price!, March 5, 2000
This review is from: Pure 80's (Audio CD)
For the cost of the CD, this is a very good overview of the technicolor day-glo era.

There are of course the usual omissions that happen due to licencing and so on. The Bangles, Madonna, Price, Michael Jackson, Sting, etc. And there are no liner notes, which is disappointing.

However, this is an excellent collection of the 80's sound, and the price is right.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superb Sonic Sensation Of 80's Hits!, September 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pure 80's (Audio CD)
With the MTV debut song "Video Killed the Radio Star" and a generous 19 more keyboard-synth heavy songs that could have only come from the Reagan Era, this collection should appeal to the early to mid-80's MTV fans that remember when they spun "only" music video 24 hrs a day. As an "80's child" that graduated high school in '84, I think these songs serve as a great soundtrack to those days. I would definitely recommend this over any other single 80's CD out there. Hope there are more to follow!

4.0 out of 5 stars God, I Miss the Decade of Excess!, May 10, 2000
By
This review is from: Pure 80's (Audio CD)
This CD makes me so nostalgic for my childhood... I chose to rate it at 4 stars, though, because there are some great 80s bands/artists missing. But, this is bound to happen when you can only choose a handful of songs to speak for an entire decade, and I do think Pure 80s does well. From the first video ever shown on MTV ("Video Killed The Radio Star"), this CD accurately captures some of the best 80s tunes. "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears are two of the all-time greatest anthems of the 80s excess and ambition that we spent so many years bashing in the 90s (which I find rather hypocritical) and great songs by Culture Club, Duran Duran, Stray Cats, Squeeze, Dexy's Midnight Runners, etc. A worthy investment for any 80s fan!

Hearing this CD for the first time brought back such great memories of grad school and delayed adolesence! I never realized how much I liked this music until I got this fine collection of '80s gold. With a wide range of styles, only metal types would be unhappy. My favorites included "Tainted Love", "One Thing Leads To Another" and "Centerfold". If you want to remember the fun times in '80s, buy this CD!

This CD really has some great cuts -- It spans one hit wonders and includes several more durable great bands too. No collection on one disc would ever be complete, but the great thing about this CD is that you get many of the songs you might want without having to spend on each album (what else did the Buggles do?). Starting with Video Killed the Radio Star, (the song first played on MTV), and ending with one of Squeeze's strongest "Tempted", the disc is entirely playable all the way through. You won't be skipping songs (unless you can't stand Culture Club, but yes they happened in the 80's) -you'll be singing along to the tunes if you love 80's music. Hungry like the Wolf, Come on Eileen, etc, Madness's Our House, all of these just catch your ears and heart and offer a really solid collection. There are 20 songs, and I just wish some of them were longer -- Tainted Love is not the extended version (not the "Where did Our Love Go" remix). This CD is a great 80's collection -- one of the best I could find.

Yes Yes YES!!! WHo could ask for more in a CD? Ok maybe Falco's 'Rock me Amadeous' is missing, but look at these great songs! So go back to the days of Ronald Reagan, a young sexy Madonna, big hair, purple eye shadow, and Tom Hanks (before he got all serious).

Want to get your party started? Well nothing gets the party going like 'Our House' and 'Hungry like the Wolf'. Need to make love to that special lady in a special way? All you need to do is give 'Obsession' a spin.

Do you miss your old 80's girlfriend? Sure she's probably married with three kids by now and has added on 25 pounds. But just play 'Hold me now' and you can remember those days when it was just you and her in the back of your dad's 1977 Dodge Aspen.

This CD has a song for every mood and can satisfy all of us in a way that only the 80's can. Hey, it was our decade and we had fun. Bring back those memories of the girl you had the crush on who wore the T-shirt that read 'Frankie says Relax', and the sexy robot droids from Robert Palmer's 'Addicted to Love'.

Give me the 80's or give me death!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 80's Compilation!, January 8, 2004

I have been very selective with finding good '80s compilation CDs in the record stores. This CD I got as a Christmas gift two weeks ago, and it was one of the best presents I got! This CD is enjoyable from start to finish. Some of my faves here include "Video Killed The Radio Star" (Buggles), "One Thing Leads To Another" (The Fixx), "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" (Tears For Fears), "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" (Eurythmics), and "Hold Me Now" (Thompson Twins). This CD is all early-to-mid '80s songs, and that is one of the reasons why this CD is so good. It is consistent throughout. I highly recommend it to anyone who has been looking for a good '80s compilation CD.
