4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, September 15, 2004

I've read and reread this book for years. Like the other reviewer I have never found the sequal and wish both would be reprinted. This is one of the few books of mine that has past the generational gap in my home. My 20 year old daughter has read this book repeatedly since she was 15. The story holds itself together throughout even though it is short by my standards. (I tend to read 800 page books). The story is of half-brothers, one of low birth and one of common. The struggle of one to conquer the world, the other doing what he can to save it. There are many different species of "Genies", which are genetically altered humans, and dogs of extrodinary size that are used as mounts. Its good to see an author who can weave all these characters without losing the flow of the story. I am leaving this rather vague so I can give you an idea without blowing the story. Trust me, its worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good clean post apocalyptic times., July 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pure Blood (Paperback)
This book was a fun read. I am a bit dissapointed that neither it nor the sequel is in print currently. I guess I will have to search the used book racks to find out what happens.

The concept is fairly neat. Humans develop "genies," genetically designed humanoids to do certain things exceedingly well (scientists, warriors, etc.) The genies evidently tire of the status quo, revolt, and voila we have apocalypse. Although somewhat reminiscent of the Planet of the Apes, the set up is adequately plausible. The story focuses on the remnants of the civilization, trying to figure out the new relationships or lack of such between genies and humans. Into this situation Mr. McQuay throws some fun, if genetically destined to be one dimensional, characters. He sets up a classic "good twin, evil twin" sort of situation, and the rest is one of those guilty reading pleasures. We know it is "trash", but as far as trash goes, this stuff is pretty decent, and I am anxious to discover the fates of the half-brothers.

I certainly recommend the book, hopefully I will find the sequel. Indulge.
