Format: Audio CD
In my vast music collection, I only have a couple dozen Brazilian CDs. I must confess from the outset that I enjoy the Jobim/Gilberto end of the Brazilian music spectrum more than I do Caetono Veloso or Jorge Ben, and certainly more than all those "pop" flavored acts. Therefore, when choosing titles to purchase in Verve's new "Pure Bossa Nova" series, I was looking more for solid jazz/instrumental offerings than I was for finding some retro lounge music. Speaking of jazz, Walter Wanderley is widely regarded as the Brazilian Jimmy Smith, in truth as unfair a statement as saying Fela is the Nigerian John Coltrane, but one that is nonetheless generally accepted. Well, he is a good organist for sure, but there is no J.S. jammin' to be had here. This collection is full of tightly crafted, rather poppy hits, some even fully orchestrated. The most authentic and enjoyable numbers for me were either written by Jobim or Valle, but unfortunately no original album information is provided. Personally, a few more tracks from these sessions, and the omission of the three performances by Seu Conjunto with Orquestra, would have made this CD a more coherent affair. I'm tempted to only award three stars for this collection, but I'm sure there are listeners out there who will totally dig Walter Wanderley. Me, I think I'll just check out the Tamba Trio disc next.
