4.0 out of 5 stars Non-disco means it's not "pure" but still best of the series, February 4, 2005
This review is from: Pure Disco 2 (Audio CD)
Despite good song selections overall, I still can't give this a 5 star rating because they persist in slapping songs on there that aren't from the disco era, although in this case they keep it to just one: Irene Cara's "Flashdance (What a Feeling)". My only other quibbles are that the version of "I Will Survive" is a remix here...as is a megamix version of some other Gaynor hits tacked on as a bonus. Without these shenanigans, the series would truly nail down what kept the platform shoes shuffling in the 1970s.

The song selection here is stronger than on Disc One, making this the best choice if you're only buying one in the series. But if you really love this, you'll probably want both of them. Disc 3 is more hit and miss and probably only for diehards.

4 1/2 stars

This review is from: Pure Disco 2 (Audio CD)
Pure Disco, Vol. 2 has a lot of great disco tunes and major hits from the golden days of disco! Going to the discothèque meant you could dance your worries away and find glory on the dance floor even when you were down and out in real life. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is very nicely done.

The CD starts with "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. This sounds like a recording she made after she recorded this earlier; but it still sounds pretty good and it's still great music for dancing. KC & The Sunshine Band do their classic disco hit entitled "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty;" "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty" has one of the best disco beats I've ever heard and they sing and play this to perfection--I love it! I could never tire of hearing this song. Of course, Vicki Sue Robinson does her awesome "Turn The Beat Around;" this still gets them dancing on the dance floor and it has a wonderful beat that is irresistible! The Village People also do their campy, fun tune "Macho Man;" and listen for Sister Sledge doing an incredible hit, "We Are Family." "We Are Family" is another timeless disco tune that really makes me smile whenever I hear it.

"I Just Want to Be Your Everything" by Andy Gibb is a stunning number that showcases Andy's beautiful talents and it's another major highlight of this album. Andy sings this with lots of feeling and you can really feel that when you hear this song. The Hues Corporation also does their great "Rock The Boat;" this love song/disco tune always works great at parties and they sing this without a flaw! Van McCoy's "The Hustle" was also a tremendous hit back in the day; and whenever I hear this it always brings back fond memories for me of junior high school dances and dating.

Abba's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" has a hauntingly beautiful melody that Abba aces so easily; they were a most talented group and their success on the charts proves it! They don't get the recognition they still so richly deserve today; but you never know--maybe that will change.

The Silver Connection does their "Fly, Robin, Fly" from 1975; we often listened to this on the school bus--it had a radio and we were allowed to listen as we made the trek to and from school every day! Boy, that was great. The Weather Girls do a fantastic job with their biggest hit--that remains a cult favorite--"It's Raining Men." "It's Raining Men" had them doing this act in pink dresses with lots of beefy male dancers on the stage behind them; although I've only seen a photo I'm sure that was quite an act!

Donna Summer sings "Last Dance" with positive energy and all her heart and soul; it's terrific! The CD also ends strong with a mix medley of several songs by Gloria Gaynor--great!

Pure Disco, Vol. 2 is an excellent CD for those of us who still love disco; and this album is sure to bring back good memories for so many of us. This is also a fine introductory CD for newcomers just discovering how wonderful disco really was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! A Fun Disco Compilation!, April 15, 2001
This review is from: Pure Disco 2 (Audio CD)
Who knew a disco compilation could be so fun? This is actually one of the best (And funnest) CDs I have ever listened to. The album starts out with the fantastic I Will Survive Remix, which is followed by the classic Shake Your Booty by KC & The Sunshine Band. Vicki Sue Robinson's song Turn The Beat Around combines catchy hooks and great vocals to make one of the biggest dance anthems ever. Then the CD gets corny for just a little bit to include Macho Man and We Are Family. Irene Cara was a huge star after the songs from Fame and Flashdance, and she shows she has some killer vocals on the uplifting Flashdance (What A Feeling). The next few songs are sort of medium until you hit Rock The Boat by The Hues Corporation, which was recently featured on a Pepsi commercial. Then comes Love Rollercoaster, which was definately one of Disco's biggest hits. The rest of the highlights are Abba's haunting and catchy Gimmie! Gimmie! Gimmie! (A Man After Midnight), Anita Ward's unique vocals on Ring My Bell, the two classic hits Last Dance by Donna Summer and It's Raining Men by the Weather Girls, and then finally the Diva Megamix. If you are a fan of disco, or are just looking for a fun party CD, this is definately the one for you!
