Bringing out the Aloha,
By Steven Louis, "SLA" "Just a Listener" (L.A. CA, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pure Gabby (Audio CD)
After listening to this collection of vocal and instrumental songs, you will know why Gabby is revered by Hawaiians and is the performer that all other hawaiian musicians are measured against. There are many slack key guitarists of equal or better technique, as well as singers with beautiful and soulful renditions; but Gabby has what every maestro must have; the ability to be, not just play, the music. He's got the aloha. Get it while you still can, as this ablum is infectious.

Great Gabby! Great Hawaiian Music!,

This is Gabby Pahinui, just him and his guitar. Pure Hawaiian music-no synthesizers, no strings. Gabby's voice is great throughout with his signature falsetto and outstanding guitar playing. It seems like an audition, since Gabby slugs the beginning of each song with the title and take number. I read somewhere that Dave Guard of the Kingston Trio (a native Hawaiian and big Gabby fan) shopped this to major labels on the mainland with no success. It's hard to believe this just sat around until the late 70s to be issued. Every Hawaiian music fan should own a copy of this cd. A truly great hawaiian album!!!

Beautiful Hawaiian slack-key music,
By DJ Joe Sixpack (...in Middle America) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)

This is a beautiful set of classic Hawaiian slack key guitar music, recorded by the legendary Gabby Pahinui in an informal session in 1961. These tapes remained unissued until 1978, when they came out as a double LP. Now here they are in digital form, and it sure does sound sweet! Great stuff from a master musician and leading light of the Hawaiian cultural revival. (DJ Joe Sixpack)
