Editorial Reviews

This release, the ninth in the Pure Jerry series, delivers a front row ticket to 4 unforgettable shows with the Jerry Garcia Band in 1978. The 2-disc compilation features amazing performances from Marin Vets, Santa Cruz Civic, Keystone Berkeley and Keystone Palo Alto.

Jerry is joined on the road with John Kahn on bass, Buzz Buchanan on drums, Keith Godchaux on piano, Donna Godchaux and Maria Muldaur on vocals. The tracklist stretches from Motown to McCartney, and it's loaded with magical moments like the 20-minute odyssey of "Lonesome And A Long Way Home," and a 30-minute "Don't Let Go." It's vintage Jerry at his soulful best!

This review is from: Pure Jerry: Bay Area 1978 (Audio CD)
I'm surprised that no one else has reviewed this classic yet. This release is made up of usable songs from arun of four shows in the Bay Area in 1978 (2/18/78 Veterans Memorial Aud. 2/19/78 Santa Cruz Civic Aud. 6/10/78 Keystone Berkeley and 6/18/78 Keystone Palo Alto). The lineup consisted of Jerry and John with Keith and Donna plus Maria Muldaur and Buzz Buchanan. The playing is top notch and is one of the best Jerry releases EVER!!!! From the rocking Mystery Train opener to the 30 minute jam version of Don't Let Go to great laid back versions of Mission In The Rain and Simple Twist Of Fate and ending with a nice long version of Leon Russell/Bonnie Bramlett's Lonesome And A Long Way From Home. If you're going to own a Jerry release or looking for a place to start, this is it.
