Pretty good start of the series, September 9, 2010
This review is from: Pure Jerry: Theatre 1839, San Francisco - July 29 & 30, 1977 (3 CD Set) (Audio CD)
This release is a pretty good start to the Pure Jerry series even though it's a little weak compared to other live releases from 1976-1978. For whatever reason, the complete shows don't exist in the vault so we get what they do have.
The first disc starts with a good Mystery Train before giving way to a very good Russian Lullaby. That's What Love Will Make You Do is it's usual self but the band begins to unwind with Stir It Up so slow that at one point, it actually sounds like the band is drifting off. The problem for me, is that the first night's show feels a little disjointed. Simple Twist Of Fate is sweet but another ballad after such a sleepy Stir It Up even though it certainly picks the show up. The Way You Do The Things You Do is sweet and Donna's voice really makes these versions for me. Catfish John is really nice too.
The second disc starts with a nice Friend Of The Devil before giving way to Don't Let Go. Don't Let Go, while great, isn't quite as great as the other live JGB versions out there. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is performed very well. They Love Each Other and I Second That Emotion are good but not great versions. The second disc ends with the first released version of Paul McCartney/Wings' Let Me Roll It and it's nice.
The third disc starts with a good The Harder They Come before giving way to an early Gomorrah which is well done. Tore Up Over You is another flat out rocker while Tangled Up In Blue is a treat. My Sisters And My Brothers is a nice early version. All in all, nice enough but if you're looking to start your Jerry collection, you might want
Don't Let Go Pure Jerry: Warner Theatre, March 18, 1978 or
Pure Jerry: Bay Area 1978.
