This is a nicely written, and well-organized introduction to basic college mathematics through calculus. The material is presented in a systematic fashion, clearly showing the skills of the 18 main authors listed. It provides material in a nicely ordered fashion, where previous material provides the basis for subsequent discussions.

The book is divided into seven main sections: Foundations, Introductory Calculus, Functions, Problem solving, Mathematical Methods, Calculus methods 1, and Calculus methods 2. These sections were previously published as separate books by Cambridge University Press. The separate books had more graphics, larger type, and a much more attractive layout. They were more costly in total and the combined edition, although considerably less inviting, includes some additions, and subtractions, from the single volumes, and some additional solutions (see more on the solutions sets below).

The book is unique, in that unlike most modern texts that present quite a few pages of exposition and examples before providing problems for the reader, this text integrates the problems into the learning experience and the text flows directly into problems. In many, if not most sections, the problems sets appear to take up more pages than the text. In many texts, the problems are primarily for reinforcement and to demonstrate to the reader that they understand the material presented and build confidence. Here the problems are part-and-parcel of the learning process.

This should be an excellent way to learn mathematics. With so much of the learning dependent on the problems sets, correct solutions, worked out in detail are required.
