This is a wonderful blend of Pilates/yoga/floor barre and stretching. It begins with an extended flowing warm up. The next section focuses on core and is somewhat Pilates based, but incorporates other disciplines to make it quite unique. It is tough, at least intermediate level. It has a wonderful flowing feel to it. After core, the focus is lower body. If you love floorwork (which I do), you will love this. It really fries your legs and backside in a good way. The work mainly consists of side lying and tabletop leg movements. Finally, arms are worked using flowing movements that are almost dancer-like. Twisting movements work arms from every angle. Trudie and James both wear wrist weights during this section. This workout is done by both Trudie and James, with the camera focusing on James who is leading the workout. Instruction is done in voiceover by James. The music and voiceover are both soothing, and at the end you feel extremely worked out but also relaxed and refreshed. The following day I experienced a bit of lower body soreness primarily in my glutes. I would suggest additional stretching for the glutes on your own.

This DVD features Trudie Styler, wife of Sting, in a workout led by James D'Silva. The setting for Pure Sculpt is Styler's and Sting's beautiful Tuscan villa; the workout segments are filmed either on an outdoor patio against gorgeous mountainous scenery or in a handsomely styled indoor marble area. The music (as one might guess) is provided by Sting: soft, instrumental selections from his Songs from the Labyrinth album.

The basic design of this DVD is that there are six distinct workouts, each of approximately 10 minutes in length (actual times are below), which can be used either separately or together. Sub-menus off the Main Menu allow you either to select individual workout chapters or to customize the chapters in any order. The Main Menu of the DVD offers the following options: Play All - Workouts - Custom Workout - Bonus Materials. D'Silva instructs all of the routines via voiceover (note: he does not mirror-cue) while both he and Styler perform the moves. I have broken down each of the segments in detail below.

Warm-Up (10 minutes)
The majority of the warm-up is performed standing, with D'Silva strongly emphasizing cuing the breath as he leads a series of gentle, flowing stretches; towards the end of the warm-up, he moves to the floor for some brief work on all fours, down dog, and cobra. Unfortunately, the music is a bit loud in this section, and because D'Silva is so soft-spoken, I sometimes had trouble hearing his instructions here.

I wasn't expecting to love this video so much. I use it after my dance cardio workouts for muscle detailing and elongation. James DiSalvo gives clear instruction with Trudy Styler demonstrating excellent form at his side. Their leg/glute exercises are similar to those in Grace Lazenby's Rocking Models DVD and the arm section works the arms in all directions with light weights in a similar way that Tracy Anderson uses in her mat DVD. The stretching and core section incorporate yoga and Pilates. All the exercises are tied into breath, it's challenging yet relaxing and a wonderful addition to my workout library. I also have Trudy Styler's Ballet and Toning DVD (also with James DiSalvo) and highly recommend that one as well for building strength and flexibility.

I like my workouts to be challenging but calming at the same time. I am not into the rah rah cheerleader banter of many of the female instructors.So I was really looking forward to getting this. This dvd is done in voice over by her male trainer who has a nice voice. The music on this dvd is by Sting and is really calming and the scenery is beautiful. It is filmed at their home in Tuscany. What's not to like right? Wrong! I wasn't even through the warm up when I was getting annoyed by the man's style and 20 minutes in I turned it off cause I couldn't stand it any more. He narrates every single breath! Breathe in lift your leg, breathe out lower your leg and instead of saying we will repeat this 10 times he narrates all 10 moves. Since a lot of the moves are done very quickly this turns into verbal diarrhea right away. There is not a single moment to just listen to the music. There were times he had to talk so fast to get it all in he seemed out of breath from the effort. If you have a high tolerance for the constant breathing cues you might like this. I was disappointed.

I picked this up at Whole Foods the other day. This was great! Much better than I expected. The narrator does talk a lot, telling you when to breathe in and when to breathe out constantly. I could see how that would be annoying to some but I actually loved that most of all. Other workouts had made me lightheaded which I now attribute to not breathing correctly. This helped me so much! It's a challenging workout that at first had me going owww my legs! I was really out of shape. lol! But it's perfectly done. It's great to tone and sculpt and makes me break a sweat. I feel completely energized and toned when it's over.
