If you wanna thrash and pogo . . .,
By Danise Rodriguez (a dark corner at a messy desk) - See all my reviews

I've been a Joan Jett fan (aka jetthead) for 18 years so I know what I'm talking about when I say PURE AND SIMPLE is probably one of the best Blackhearts records she's ever done. Joan Jett's production team has always been a HIT or MISS machine. This record is defintely a HIT with true hard rock fans. The guitar riffs are MONSTEROUS and VILE and NASTY. And as always, Joan's gritty, growling, and gigantic vocals are unapologetic. The high energy and intensity of this record is proof that Joan Jett has been inspired by the new generation of female rockers that SHE had inspired. Highlights on this CD are: "Spinster" "Go Home" "Activity Grrrl". And special mention goes to two accoustic tracks, "Brighter Day" and "As I Am", which showcase a softer though no less passionate Joan Jett. This is absolutely my favorite Blackhearts record to date. Can't wait for the new one to come out!

Her Absolute Best,

If you look up rock-n-roll in the dictionary, Joan Jett's picture should be next to it.... This is an amazing collection of her best tunes, all written by her. It runs the span of her tastes and abilities. From the catchy top 40 sound of EYE TO EYE to the punk sensibility of SPINSTER. If you love rock-n-roll then this is the perfect disc for you. You get the straight ahead 3 chord style that Jett has made her signature and throws in a few surprises. Hold on, you are in for quite a ride and a total treat!

Joan Jett - 'Pure And Simple' (Warner Brothers),
By
This review is from: Pure & Simple (Audio CD)
I'm sort of amazed at how LONG former Runaway Joan Jett's career has actually lasted, and it's still running.Playing basic three chord rock&roll with sultry vocals apparently still have a call for it.I'm not complaining,I mean 'Pure...' is a decent CD,I thought.Tunes here I liked best were "Eye To Eye","Go Home","Insecure","You Got A Problem" and the a couple of tracks she penned along side with producer Desmond Child "As I Am" and "Brighter Day".If you're a major Joan Jett fan,you should enjoy this release. If you happen to be a new fan, start with 'Bad Reputation' then work your way forward.

This is another great album of Joan Jett. Her songs are getting more and more personal. There are many songs on it that I love: "Eye To Eye", "Torture", "As I Am", "Wonderin'" and "Brighter Day". The last one is one of the most touching songs of all that I know! There are also songs on this album that I don't like so much. "Spinster" doesn't feel good to me. And in "Insecure" words and music don't fit together; I would prefer to hear the same music with another text and the same text with another music. Yet I give five stars to this album, because it is Joan Jett, and that is good!

Insecure, Hell...,

"Insecure" is one of the greatest rock'n'roll songs ever; right up with "Bad Reputation" and "I Love Playin' With Fire". It sort of reminds me of the Ronettes... The rest of the album is pretty damn cool too...Dimestore Liam

Too Simple?,

All you have to do is look at the release date to know why this (a very fine hard Rock And Roll record) would go unnoticed, and you add in that she is indeed a female making rock and we all know radio steers clear of women for the most part, or limits it's number that's been proven before.Overall a very nice CD from Joan, this one is one of my favs with so many great songs on it. Favs include "Wonderin'", "Insecure", "As I Am", "Consumed", and the closer "Brighter Day"...which sounds great driving very late at night btw blasting in the summer. The majority of the songs on here are guitar heavy catchy anthems that are not too much different that here early work, this is...pure and simple, and perhaps people in '94 were too hip, or too cool to appreciate basic hard rock, she wasn't the only one who got lost in the media frenzy to cover a certain sound out of Seattle. If you were listening to hard rock about having a good time with a positive message, you were considered some type of freak I think is how it seemed. You were supposed to be wallowing in self pity and pushing away helpful things, not trusting anyone along the way. In a way it's funny with a song like "Insecure" one would think it would fit with the times, but it comes in a upbeat tone, catchy as heck, and makes you feel...happy to be insecure, not sad and gloomy. I think alot of people don't even know this record exists, and it's been 15 years since it's release....not surprising, but a classic now that it's been that long to people who believe in Rock and women who rock like Joan Jett.

The sum of its parts do not equal the whole work,

Three PURE AND SIMPLE songs stand out: "Consumed," "Activity Grrrl" and "As I Am." The rest of the electric guitar-laden songs seem to blend together, making for an enjoyable listen. P.S.: In a world where the likes of Shania Twain and Mariah Carey depend as much on their great looks as they do on their music, bravo to Joan Jett for the semi-nude, tee-hee PURE AND SIMPLE cover shot, where she does nothing to fox up her plain-jane appearance. Take Joan, as she is.

This album DID NOT get the recognition it SO deserved. It's some the hardest stuff Joan Jett's EVER written. "Go Home" is kinda confusing at first, "Eye To Eye" is kewl, "Spinster" ROCKS!, "Torture" is fun, "Wonderin'", should've been a video, "You Got A Problem"..... AWESOME! But my favorite from this album, is "Consumed". True Jett form. This is one of Joan Jett's BEST CDs. I HIGHLY recommend this CD if you LOVE rock 'n' roll. And if you LOVE Joan Jett.
