5.0 out of 5 stars holistic skin care at its best, July 13, 2006
This review is from: Pure Skin: Organic Beauty Basics (Hardcover)
I absolutely loved this book. I am an esthetician and getting into holistic facials. I've learned so much and share this book with many people. It explains skin type and what essential oils to use on what type. I also love the easy recipes.

This book is amazing for anyone one that works in the skin care business. As an up and coming herbalist I have been looking for recipes for natural skin care products for my store. Most of the organic skin care books that I have purchase have recipes that are made with food products that have no shelf life and have to be discarded after every application. I don't know about you but I can't run to the kitchen to whip up a facial scrub every time I need to clean my face. This book has many recipes that have a shelf life and are simple and easy to make.

The books starts with explaining the author's "skin personalities", not just normal, dry and oily, then goes into the recommended essential oils, vegetal oils and herbal extracts that are best for each skin personalities.

This is also the first book I have come across that talks about good skin starts from the inside. It discusses how to detox the body, what foods, herbs and vitamins are best for clarifying the skin.

I usually go through my herbal book highlighting them for future reference. I can't bring myself to put one mark in this book. It is so beautifully designed and the photos are gorgeous. The author should be very proud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource, May 22, 2008

The way that skin types are described in this book is one of the most inclusive and helpful set of definitions that I've come across.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, March 24, 2010

This review is from: Pure Skin: Organic Beauty Basics (Hardcover)
Pure Skin is a book everyone should have whether you are an esthetician, like myself, or someone who is interested in the simple "tricks" for beautiful skin. This book has some very basic knowledge of skin, enough for anyone to get familiar with how it works, what is good or bad for it and how to fix concerns about it with ingredients in your own kitchen. I, myself, have experimented with "Kitchen beauty" and can appreciate the pureness of products I put on my skin. In a world where the cosmetic industry is not regulated, it's a blessing to come across a book that cares bout your overall well being, that opens your eyes to some fun and efficient, as well as economical ways to get the job done!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Easy, Informative Read with Gorgeous Photos, December 21, 2009

This is a lovely book. It's well written, well organized, practical, and filled with gorgeous photos. I feel soothed every time I pick it up! It's perfect for those who like their green to come with a side of chic.

Barbara Close outlines her five skin personalities (balanced, hormone reactive, stress reactive, environment reactive and mature) and gives simple prescriptions for each, including what ingredients to look for in skincare care products as well as foods to eat & avoid based on your skin type, which I loved. The book also has short dictionaries of plant oils, herbal extracts, essential oils, and skin-clarifying herbs plus the top toxic ingredients.

I most enjoyed her chapter on "Eating for Beautiful Skin." Close is a rarity in the organic beauty industry; she's a foodie, espousing moderation and pleasurable, healthy meals -- not seaweed soups and raw food diets. We're all going to indulge in too much red wine or go for the chocolate walnut brownie every now and then, she says. Don't beat yourself up. She then provides a helpful grocery shopping list.

If you're trying to decide between this and Julie Gabriel's self-contradicting and visually dull Green Beauty Guide, go with Pure Skin.

This book is a delight. It has beautiful pictures and recipes. I created most of them and they are great like the expensive beauty products. Wonderful recommendations on skin care and the different types of skin. A lot of information on carrier oils and EOs. Create your own spa at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!, February 3, 2008
This review is from: Pure Skin: Organic Beauty Basics (Hardcover)
I'm rather picky when it comes to all natural beauty guides--often disappointed by the simple "recipes" I could probably figure out by myself (ie: add five drops of essential oil to unscented lotion). The beauty recipes in this book are limited, but more complex and actually worth trying/using. Good information on essential oils and blending, as well as a few tasty [food]recipes. This is a wonderful natural spa book. I especially love how the author doesn't use [the book] as a tool to push Naturopathica products =)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! :), September 9, 2010

This book exceeded my expectations! I have several books on organic skin care and similar subjects but none of them are as simple and rational as this one. The author explains skin & skin "types" in very different & unique way providing excellent reference guides with tables, descriptions, links & many other resources for the reader to be able to expand his research... Best thing is it goes beyond conventional skin care recommending foods, nutritional supplements, herbs, etc. for each specific skin type or condition to be treated in a truly holistic way.
