Editorial Reviews

Slug Magazine, May 2007

Dalek & Haze = crazy animation + experimental rock music First of all this is not Dälek the experimental rapper who is also on Ipecac this is Dalek (with out the two dots over the letter a) who is visual artist that creates pictures of deranged space monkeys, also signed to Ipecac. Haze XXL is the former guitar player of Halo Of Flies. These two have teamed up to form an art project that consists of graphic art, animation and music. The whole project is called A Purge of Dissidents and when purchased comes with a book of Dalek's art, a DVD consisting of Dalek's art pieced together in animation with the Haze XXL soundtrack playing over it, and a CD with just the Haze XXL soundtrack. This stuff is quite complicated and confusing at first but once to you start absorbing all the different media it begins to make sense. The DVD is definitely the most entertaining part of the package; it ties all of the projects elements together. The animation consists of a lime green self mutilating space monkey stabbing himself and floating around in a rainbow house with a canon that shoots diamond bullets at evil faces with money signs for eyes. The soundtrack is short bits of songs performed by Haze XXL, The Melvins, Grant Hart (Hüsker Dü), and Kenny Greenbaum (Princess Dragon/ Mog Stunt/Team 555), that sounds like a more cohesive version of Fantômas. It's all pretty experimental and psychedelic. Buy this package if you feel like tripping out and driving yourself insane. -Jon Robertson

Product Description

It's impossible to sum up this monster project in a couple paragraphs, but we'll give it a shot. The nutshell version: The project includes 10 short animated films featuring the appealingly disturbed Space Monkey character of Dalek's creation, plus a 48 page book. Accompanying these shorts is all new original music from HAZE XXL. Let us explain further......

Dalek, aka James Marshall, is one of the most exciting artists from the burgeoning Brooklyn art scene. Graduating with a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, he furthered honed his skills assisting Takashi Murakami. For those not familiar with Dalek, his three books of collected work shows a precision influenced by the computer graphic explosion, yet by performing these feats by hand.

HAZE XXL, aka Tom Hazelmyer, comes from the background of late 70's/early 80's Minneapolis Punk/Hardcore scene. He spun his garage-band roots into Halo of Flies, founded the indie label Amphetamine Reptile Records and has been running the Ox-Op gallery since 2003.

To insure that the music for "A Purge of Dissidents" (APOD) was anything but the usual sterile avant garde soundtracks that typically accompany most films offered in the fine art world, Hazelmyer enlisted a cadre of underground movers and shakers that included such folks as The Melvins, Grant Hart (Husker Du), and Kenny Greenbaum (of Detroit's infamous Princess Dragon Mouth/Mog Stunt Team 555) to create some twisted aural backdrops that are as disturbed as Dalek's infamous Space Monkey itself. He then took some of the 30 finished instrumentals, and had various friends put their own spin on them by including vocals by Craig Finn (Hold Steady), David Yow (Jesus Lizard/Scratch Acid), Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion), and Grant Hart (Husker Du). The APOD soundtrack includes a track from each of these sessions, but they are also being released as a series of 7" singles in conjunction with the entire project.

Aside from various art/gallery shows taking place over the next year, "A Purge Of Dissidents" will be on the road, shown at screenings prior to Melvins shows on their upcoming national tour this fall.

This review is from: Purge of Dissidents (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
First of all, I liked it, but its not for everybody. I guess its not supposed to be though. Its good cause its short and sweet. The animations are kinda repetitive though and the music is forgettable. Still its decent and worth having if you're into Dalek already.
